Langate, May 31:In A profound loss to the political and social landscape of North Kashmir, veteran politician and former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Langate, Mohd Sultan Pandithpori, passed away yesterday evening at the age of 94.
A towering political figure in the region, Pandithpori served as an MLA twice from the Langate constituency — first winning in 1977 and later reclaiming the seat in the 1999 assembly elections. He was also a former Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) and played a crucial role in shaping the early political narrative of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in North Kashmir, especially in the Kupwara district.
Mohd Sultan Pandithpori was known for his humility, honesty, and unwavering commitment to public welfare. He dedicated his life to the upliftment of underprivileged communities and tirelessly worked for the development of Langate, at a time when basic infrastructure was scarce. During his tenure, he was instrumental in sanctioning hundreds of bridges, roads, and water supply schemes for the constituency.
In 2008, he narrowly lost the assembly seat to Er. Rashid by a slim margin of 213 votes, marking the end of an era in Langate’s political history.
In 2018, while on his way to SKIMS Srinagar to visit a local patient, his vehicle came under attack from stone-pelters. A stone struck his forehead, leaving him severely injured. Since then, his health had deteriorated, and he gradually withdrew from active public life. Over the past year, his condition worsened.
Pandithpori was a man of the people — he often preferred to stay in modest homes rather than affluent households during his visits, reflecting his deep connection with the common masses. Known for his compassionate nature, he also played a key role in securing employment for thousands of local youth in various government departments.
He is survived by his family, including his son Irfan Sultan Pandithpori, who currently serves as the District Development Council (DDC) Chairman Kupwara.
As per the family sources, his Nimaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers) will be held this morning between 09:00 AM to 10:00 AM at his Noor Bagh residence in Baramulla.
The demise of Mohd Sultan Pandithpori marks the end of a significant chapter in the political history of North Kashmir. He will be remembered for his integrity, grassroots connection, and dedicated service to the people.
May his soul rest in peace. (HT-NEWSNETWORK)
