Cabinet Refers Reservation Panel Report to Law Department for Review

HT NEWS DESK

Srinagar, June 19 : The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet has forwarded the Cabinet Sub Committee (CSC) report on reservations to the Law Department for legal scrutiny, officials said on Wednesday.

The move follows detailed deliberations on the CSC’s recommendations, which focus on the state’s existing reservation structure.

Officials said that any changes, particularly those affecting the general category quota, could invite legal challenges due to constitutional protections and parliamentary laws governing reservations.

The CSC was formed by the Omar Abdullah-led government in December 2024 after widespread protests by general-category students.

The panel finalized its report on June 10, 2025. Presently, reservations in J&K account for nearly 70%, leaving less than 30% for open merit, prompting calls for a review.

No deadline has been set for the Law Department’s opinion. The Cabinet will revisit the matter once legal vetting is complete. (CNS)
