SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 11: The cultural fraternity of Jammu and Kashmir is mourning the demise of legendary Rabab maestro, ghazal singer and Sana Khawan Ustad Asadullah Shah, whose contribution to preserving the Valley’s rich musical heritage over more than five decades earned him widespread respect and admiration.

Remembered as one of Kashmir’s distinguished Rabab players, Ustad Asadullah Shah dedicated his life to preserving and promoting traditional music, playing a significant role in keeping the region’s Sufiana music, Chakri and folk ghazals alive. His exceptional command of the Rabab and soulful performances made him a revered figure among music lovers across the Valley.
His presence at musical gatherings, weddings, traditional mehfils and cultural programmes reflected his deep-rooted connection with Kashmir’s artistic traditions. His association with Radio Kashmir further strengthened his bond with audiences and contributed to the preservation and popularisation of traditional Kashmiri music.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Ustad Asadullah Shah was regarded as a custodian of Kashmir’s cultural identity and the spirit of Kashmiriyat. His demise has left a profound void in the region’s cultural landscape, particularly among those dedicated to safeguarding its indigenous artistic traditions.
Dr Rafiq Masoodi Pays Emotional Tribute
Expressing deep sorrow over the maestro’s demise, Dr Rafiq Masoodi paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary artist, describing him as an invaluable part of Kashmir’s cultural heritage.
“The news of Ustad Asadullah Shah’s demise has deeply pained me. He was not just an artist but a living heritage of Kashmir. His Rabab did not merely produce music; it spoke to the soul. His loss is irreparable and marks a deeply painful day for Kashmiri culture,” Dr Masoodi said.
He further stated that Meeras Mahal Museum stood in solidarity with the bereaved family during this difficult hour and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.
The passing of Ustad Asadullah Shah marks the loss of a veteran exponent of Kashmir’s traditional musical heritage. His melodies, artistic excellence and lifelong dedication to music will remain etched in the collective memory of the people and continue to inspire generations of musicians and cultural enthusiasts.
