Handwara,Apr,20: In A significant step toward protecting forest resources and dismantling illegal timber networks, Handwara Police have intensified their operations in the Darashpora area, seizing 28 logs of illicit timber during a well-coordinated raid based on specific intelligence inputs.
The operation, carried out at two separate locations within Darashpora, was part of a sustained campaign aimed at curbing environmental crimes in the region. Acting swiftly on credible leads, the police team conducted searches that led to the recovery of the smuggled timber. The material was promptly seized and taken into police custody.
Following the recovery, an FIR (No. 80/2025) was registered at Police Station Handwara under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 26 of the Indian Forest Act. The case has now entered the investigation phase, with authorities working to trace the broader network possibly involved in the illegal trade of forest produce.
The accused have been identified as Showkat Ahmad Mir and Mohd Amin Tantray, both residents of Dureshpora, Handwara.
Police sources revealed that further arrests and recoveries are likely in the coming days as investigations expand.
This is the second major operation targeting timber smuggling in Darashpora within a span of one week. In an earlier drive, multiple locations across the same area were searched, resulting in the seizure of illegally felled timber. That consignment was subsequently handed over to the Forest Department for further legal action.
Officials have expressed concern over the recurring instances of forest violations in Darashpora and surrounding areas, noting that such activities not only cause ecological imbalance but also pose a challenge to sustainable forest management.
A senior police officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, reiterated the department’s resolve to root out illegal forest activities. “Handwara Police remains committed to safeguarding our ecological heritage. We will continue to act firmly against anyone found guilty of timber smuggling or environmental crimes,” the official said.
Emphasizing the importance of community involvement, the police have called upon local residents to play a proactive role in conserving the region’s natural wealth. They urged citizens to report any suspicious activity or movement of forest produce to the nearest police station or forest office.
“Public cooperation is a vital pillar in our efforts to protect the environment. Together, we can ensure that our forests remain a legacy for future generations,” the statement added.
The continued focus on environmental protection by the Handwara Police underscores the growing recognition of ecological security as a key law enforcement priority in the region.
