Celebration of 150 Years of National Pride: “Vande Mataram” Observed at Town Hall Handwara

Handwara, Nov 08:The 150th anniversary of the iconic national song “Vande Mataram” was celebrated with great zeal and patriotic fervour at Town Hall Handwara. The event, organized at the sub-district level, brought together students from various government and private schools who enthusiastically participated in a Quiz Competition and Patriotic Cultural Programmes, showcasing their love for the nation through songs, speeches, and performances.
Presiding over the function, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Handwara, Javed Naseem Masoodi, underscored the immense historical significance of “Vande Mataram”, describing it as “a timeless expression of the nation’s collective spirit and identity.” He emphasized that the song continues to inspire unity, sacrifice, and devotion among Indians even after 150 years of its creation.
Vande Mataram” (meaning “I bow to thee, Mother”) was composed in 1875 by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, one of India’s most revered literary figures, and later included in his famous novel Anandamath (1882). The song was originally written in Sanskrit and Bengali and served as a rallying cry during India’s struggle for independence.
The song praises Bharat Mata (Mother India) as the embodiment of strength, beauty, and prosperity, symbolizing the nation itself. During the freedom movement, “Vande Mataram” became a unifying slogan against colonial rule, inspiring countless freedom fighters including Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Subhas Chandra Bose. It was sung at the sessions of the Indian National Congress and became synonymous with India’s national awakening.
The event was graced by ASP Handwara, Tehsildar Handwara, Executive Engineer R&B Division Handwara, Zonal Education Officer Handwara, and officers from various line departments, reflecting strong community participation and administrative support.
During the function, certificates of appreciation were distributed among the students and participants for their outstanding performances and contributions in making the celebration a success. The event concluded with a collective rendition of “Vande Mataram”, filling the hall with patriotic passion and reverence.
