Skill Development Programme Empowers Specially-Abled Persons in Kupwara

Kupwara, Nov 4:A one-day skill development programme for specially-abled persons was organised on Tuesday at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kupwara in collaboration with the Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) Bemina, Srinagar, aiming to equip participants with practical agricultural skills and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof.Kaiser Mohi-ud-Din Malik, Professor and Head, KVK Kupwara, who delivered an inspiring address highlighting the need to view disability as a distinctive ability rather than a limitation. “Disability is not a barrier but a distinctive lens through which we often find hidden abilities,” he said, motivating participants to overcome personal challenges through innovation and self-confidence.

The event featured interactive sessions and hands-on training conducted by KVK scientists on low-cost, home-based agricultural enterprises such as mushroom cultivation, vermicomposting, beekeeping, and hydroponic vegetable production. Participants were also briefed on availing government subsidies and support schemes under the National Horticulture Mission and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).

More than 30 participants from across Kupwara district took part in the training, which combined vocational education with counselling on social and economic empowerment. The programme aimed to help specially-abled individuals become self-reliant and active contributors to the local economy.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Malik reaffirmed KVK Kupwara’s commitment to inclusive development. He said, “Our goal is for each participant to become a beacon of change within their community.” The KVK has also pledged post-training follow-up, including on-site visits and distribution of starter seed kits to help participants implement their learning.

Expressing gratitude, Prof. Malik thanked Dr. Shahbaz Yousuf from VMS Bemina for his valuable insights and support during the programme. The collaborative initiative was widely appreciated for promoting dignity, empowerment, and self-reliance among the specially-abled community of Kupwara.
