Minister Sakeena Itoo, Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani review flood preparedness in Srinagar

Srinagar, Sep 3 : Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, along with Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, on Wednesday visited the Irrigation and Flood Control Room at Rambagh to assess the prevailing flood situation in Kashmir.

The Minister and the Advisor reviewed the monitoring systems in place, the current water levels in the Jhelum, and steps being taken to secure low-lying and vulnerable areas. Senior officers of the Flood and Irrigation Department, SDRF, and district administration briefed them about ongoing measures, including round-the-clock watch over embankments and readiness of men and machinery.

Chairing a meeting at the Flood Control Room, Sakeena Itoo directed officers to ensure that real-time information reaches the public without delay. She called for timely advisories and alerts to facilitate orderly evacuation from flood-prone zones if required.

She further stressed that field staff and equipment must remain positioned near embankments to respond swiftly in case of breaches or emergencies. “People need accurate and timely information. Our priority is to keep them safe and prepared,” she told officials.

Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani echoed the call for synergy among all line departments and urged continuous coordination to deal with any eventuality. Both the Minister and the Advisor appealed to the public to remain calm, cooperate with authorities, and follow official advisories during the ongoing adverse weather.

The government, they assured, is committed to safeguarding lives and minimizing damage. Constant awareness drives, they said, would help ensure that communities remain informed and alert. [KNT]
