SKUAST-K Concludes Week-Long Training on Niche Crops, Horticulture under JKCIP

Srinagar,Aug,13: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has concluded a week-long Capacity Building Programme on Agri Niche Crop and Horticulture Promotion Support under the J&K Competitiveness Improvement Project (JKCIP), funded by IFAD. The training, organised by the Directorate of Extension from August 8 to 13, aimed at strengthening technical and extension skills of agriculture and horticulture officers and field staff across the UT.
Director Extension, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, in her valedictory address, said the programme had bridged critical skill gaps and would help officers promote innovative practices in niche crop cultivation, orchard management, post-harvest handling and market linkages. She emphasised the role of trained officers as key facilitators at the grassroots.
Project Coordinator JKCIP, Prof. Ashiq H. Pandith, highlighted thematic areas including saffron, lavender, buckwheat, quinoa, climate-resilient farming, orchard rejuvenation, pest management, cold chain development and value addition.
Deputy Director Trainings, Dr. Farahanaz Rasool, informed that 300 participants, including 48 agriculture officers, 48 horticulture officers and 200 field staff, attended the programme. Feedback revealed that over 90% participants found the training relevant and practical.
The event concluded with recommendations for refresher trainings, exposure visits and strengthening ICT-based farmer advisory services.
