Handwara,Apr,18: In A swift and effective response to a recent case of snatching, Handwara Police have arrested the accused and recovered stolen gold ornaments, bringing relief to the victim and earning appreciation from the local community.
The incident occurred on April 15, when Ms. Zainab Rafiq, a resident of Waghat Palpora, Magam, reported that an unidentified individual had followed her in the Handwara market and snatched her handbag near the New Bus Stand before fleeing the scene. The bag reportedly contained valuable gold ornaments.
Following the complaint, Police Station Handwara registered FIR No. 76/2025 under Section 304 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and immediately launched an investigation. A dedicated team was tasked with identifying and apprehending the culprit.
Utilizing technical surveillance and thorough fieldwork, investigators identified Basit Fayaz Tantray, son of Fayaz Ahmad Tantray of Khonbal Handwara, as the prime suspect. He was subsequently arrested and, during interrogation, confessed to the crime. The stolen gold ornaments were recovered from his possession following his disclosure.
The prompt resolution of the case has been widely praised by residents, highlighting the efficiency and commitment of the Handwara Police. Authorities have stated that further investigation is underway to determine if the accused is linked to any other similar cases.
