Langate,April,15:In A significant crackdown on illegal timber operations, the Forest Department, in collaboration with Handwara Police and the Revenue Department, conducted joint raids in Dorishpora village of Rajwar Forest Range, under Langate Forest Division. The operation led to the seizure of a large quantity of illicitly felled timber and firewood, reportedly stockpiled for over six years.
Acting on specific field intelligence, the joint team raided six houses suspected of hoarding smuggled timber. During the search, authorities recovered 18 Deodar (dry) timber logs—measuring approximately 40 cubic feet in total. The seized logs were safely transported to the Central Seizure Depot Langate under Form 25 No. 87237 dated April 15, 2025, despite facing strong resistance, particularly from women in the locality attempting to obstruct the seizure.
A case under the Forest Protection Act has been registered at Police Station Handwara, and six individuals have been nominated for further investigation under FIR No. 75/2025.
While talking to HEADLINES TODAY,Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Langate praised the efforts of the field teams. “This operation highlights our resolve to tackle illegal timber smuggling. Our officers and frontline staff worked tirelessly with police and revenue officials to make this operation a success,” he stated. He further emphasized the importance of community participation in safeguarding forest resources.
“We have strengthened our field intelligence network and are collaborating with other enforcement agencies to curb such activities. I appeal to the public to come forward with credible information on forest offences to help us protect our natural heritage,” the DFO added.
The Forest Department reiterated its commitment to upholding forest laws and ensuring strict action against violators.
