DMO Kupwara Launches Major Enforcement Drive; 12 Tractors Seized; Rs 1.70 Lakh Penalty Recovered

Kupwara,Jun,20: In a major crackdown on illegal mining and unauthorized transportation of minerals, the Geology and Mining Department Kupwara seized 12 vehicles and recovered Rs 1.70 lakh in penalties during a special enforcement drive conducted across the district over the past three days.
The operation was launched on the directions of District Mineral Officer (DMO) Kupwara, Naveed Hussain Badroo (JKAS), as part of an intensified campaign to curb illegal extraction and ensure strict compliance with mining and environmental regulations.
According to In-charges, despite limited manpower, field teams are working round the clock to prevent illegal mining and unauthorized transportation of minerals across the district.
During the drive, 12 tractors involved in the illegal transportation of minerals were seized from different locations. The department also imposed and recovered penalties amounting to Rs 1.70 lakh from vehicle owners found violating mining laws and transportation norms.
Speaking to Headlines Today, DMO Naveed Hussain Badroo said this was his first major enforcement operation since assuming charge as District Mineral Officer Kupwara.
He said the action is part of an ongoing campaign aimed at curbing unlawful mining activities and safeguarding the district's natural resources.
“All seized vehicles have been taken into custody and further legal proceedings are underway. Illegal mining not only violates the law but also poses a serious threat to the environment and water resources,” he said.
Referring to a recent review meeting, Badroo expressed satisfaction over the dedication and commitment of the department's field staff.
“I am satisfied with the excellent work being carried out by our field teams in tackling illegal mining activities across the district, especially in Langate and Handwara and Kupwara,despite manpower constraints,” he said.
As part of the enforcement exercise, officials also blocked several unauthorized routes near Nallah Talri in Gonipora Handwara, and Hanjipora Kupwara, where illegal extraction activities had reportedly been taking place in recent days.
The DMO issued a stern warning to those involved in illegal mining, stating that strict action under the provisions of the Mining Act would be taken against anyone found violating the law.
He also thanked Handwara and Kupwara Police especially ADC Handwara,the two magistrates Tehsildar Handwara and Tehsildar Langate for their timely assistance and coordination during enforcement operations.
Appealing to the public, Badroo urged residents to cooperate with the department in protecting the environment and conserving the district's water resources, which he described as the lifelines of Kupwara.
The Geology and Mining Department reiterated its commitment to continue regular inspections and enforcement drives to prevent illegal mining and promote the sustainable use of natural resources throughout the district.
