Srinagar, June 9 : National Conference (NC) President Dr Farooq Abdullah expressed delight over the newly-inaugurated train service to Kashmir, describing it as a significant step that will ease the lives of locals, improve connectivity, and boost multiple sectors, including tourism and horticulture.

Speaking to reporters before boarding the inaugural train to Katra, Abdullah, flanked by senior party leaders, said the launch of this train service marks a transformative moment for the Valley. “Today is a big day for us. This rail connection will provide immense relief to the people, and I feel fortunate to be traveling on it myself,” he said.

The former Chief Minister underlined the challenges faced by residents due to the frequent closures of the Jammu-Srinagar highway. “Whenever the highway gets blocked due to weather or landslides, airfares shoot up and become unaffordable for common people. This train will end that exploitation,” he noted.

Highlighting its economic potential, Dr Abdullah said the rail route would help Kashmiri horticulturists by ensuring quicker transportation of fruits and other perishable items to outside markets. “This will make a huge difference to our growers who suffer losses because of delays in transport,” he remarked.

He also pointed out that tourists would greatly benefit from the improved accessibility to the Valley. “With faster, cheaper, and safer travel now possible, more people will be encouraged to visit Kashmir,” he added.

Farooq Abdullah’s remarks came as he joined the first official journey of the train, which was recently flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country through the railway network for the first time. [KNT]
