Militants shot dead PDP Sarpanch in Khonmoh

 

Srinagar, March 9: Unidentified militants shot dead a Panchayat member in the Khonmoh area on the outskirts of Srinagar here this evening, police said.

Sarpanch affiliated with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) identified as Sameer Ahmad Bhat was shot at and critically injured by unidentified militants this evening.

The injured according to police was immediately removed to the SMHS hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Confirming the death, Medical Superintendent SMHS hospital, Dr Kanwaljeet Singh said the slain Sarpanch had received two bullets in his chest.

“The injured had received two bullets in his chest; he was accordingly operated upon but succumbed to his injuries,” added MS SMHS.

Meanwhile, entire area was cordoned off by the joint team of police and paramilitary forces to nab the assailants. Meanwhile, a formal case was lodged at the concerned police station under relevant sections of law and an investigation was taken up.

The targeted killing was carried out hours after an Improvised Explosive Device attack in Udhampur town in the Jammu region, in which one person was killed and 14 others injured.

On Sunday, Militants threw a grenade at a busy marketplace in Srinagar, killing two and injuring 38 others.

Police said they have arrested two persons involved in the grenade attack.

Meanwhile, PDP in a tweet condemned the killing of Sarpanch and said that such recurring attacks highlight the deteriorating security scenario in Kashmir.

“Strongly condemn the assassination of Sarpanch Khonmoh, Sameer Ahmed Bhat. Contrary to the tall claims of the administration such recurring attacks highlight the deteriorating security scenario in Kashmir. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this hour of grief,” J&K PDP tweeted.
