SRINAGAR: University of Kashmir on Tuesday notified about the postponement of exams scheduled for tomorrow, February 21, 2024. 

"It is notified for the information of all concerned candidates that due to inclement weather conditions, all examinations of University of Kashmir which are scheduled to be held on 21 of February 2024 stand postponed", reads a notification as per GNS. 

Fresh dates shall be issued soon, reads the notification by Assistant Controller of Examination of the varsity. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Barring Gulmarg, minimum temperature recorded a slight rise in Kashmir Valley with Srinagar recording minus 3.7°C on Saturday, officials said.   

A meteorological department official here told GNS Srinagar recorded a rise of 1.2°C compared to previous night's minus 4.9°C and it was 1.6°C below normal for the summer capital of J&K for this time of the year.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 4.0°C against minus 5.0°C on the previous night, he said. The minimum temperature was 0.7°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, the MeT official said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 5.5°C against minus 6.3°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 2.0°C against minus 1.4°C on the previous night and the temperature was above normal by 1.9°C for the place, the official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.7°C against minus 5.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.6°C below normal there, the official said.

Gulmarg, the official said, recorded a low of minus 4.6°C against minus 3.6°C on the previous night and the temperature was 3.1°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir.

Jammu, he said, recorded a minimum of 5.9°C against 5.0°C on the previous night, and it was below normal by 1.2°C for the winter capital of J&K.

Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.4°C, Batote 1.9°C and Bhaderwah minus 0.4°C, he said.

The MeT has forecast for light snow at isolated higher reaches on January 25 and light rain and snow over scattered places for subsequent two days in Jammu and Kashmir.

 “Dry weather is likely to continue till January 24 with generally cloudy on 20th evening,” the official said.

On January 25, he said, light snow at isolated higher reaches was expected while from January 26-28, light rain and snow was expected over scattered places.

 “As per indications of different models, there is possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places very likely from January 29-31,(Detailed information will be shared in coming days),” he said 

The MeT department also forecast redevelopment of moderate to dense fog and fall in day temperature over Jammu Division during next three days.

Kashmir valley is under ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter, which will end on January 29. However it does not mean an end to the winter. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1. SRINAGAR:  Gulmarg and Pahalgam recorded sub-zero nights even as minimum temperature remained above normal in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

A meteorological temperature department official told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 4.8°C against 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 5.7°C above normal for this time of the year in Srinagar.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 3.4°C against 2.2°C on the previous night, he said. The minimum temperature was 4.4°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, the official said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against 0.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.9°C above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 2.2°C against 2.0°C on the previous night and the temperature was above normal for the place by 2.8°C, the official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of 2.3°C against 2.6°C on the previous night and it was 3.7°C above normal there, the official said.

Gulmarg, the official said, recorded a low of minus 3.3°C against minus 1.8°C on the previous night and the latest temperature was 0.3°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 11.2°C, against 10.7°C on previous night, and it was above normal by 1.4°C for the winter capital of J&K, he said.

From December 2-7, he said, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy.

From December 8-10, he said, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected. "Fall in Minimum temperature by 3-5°C is expected from 2nd December onwards." (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Weather department on Friday forecast  mainly hot and dry weather in Jammu and Kashmir but isolated late afternoon or evening showers has not been ruled out. 

“Mainly hot and dry weather is expected today. Rain may occur at isolated to scattered places of Jammu & Kashmir towards late afternoon/evening,” a meteorological department official here told GNS.

He said that no large change was expected with the weather on weekend and same conditions are expected on August 5-6. 
He said from August 7-10, “mainly dry weather” is expected.

“There is no forecast of any major rainfall this week and weather is expected to be mainly hot and dry.” (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Amid the frequent wet spells in Jammu and Kashmir this month, the summer capital of the Union Territory, Srinagar has broken all previous records as for the first time since 1891, the station has received a precipitation of 187.2 mm.

It has been after 131 years that Srinagar has witnessed such a huge precipitation in July month.

Independent Weather Forecaster, Faizan Arif Keng told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Srinagar records wettest July in at least 131 years, saying that the Rambagh Observatory in Srinagar received the highest total rainfall in July since its establishment in 1891, recording 187.2 mm of rainfall this July.

“The majority of this rainfall occurred during three spells: 20.0 mm on 08 July, 50.6 mm on 20 July, and 53.4 mm on 27 July,” he said, adding that before this year, the highest-ever rainfall recorded in the month of July was 182.6 mm in 1988.

Some of the areas in the Valley also received record-breaking precipitation in the month of July, he said, adding that Qazigund in South Kashmir has recorded the highest rainfall in this month in 28 years.

A total rainfall of 197.7 mm was recorded in July 2023 at Qazigund, he said, adding that the previous record and all-time record is 280.1 mm in 1995, saying that the highest rainfall has been recorded since 1996.

In Pahalgam, a precipitation of 225.5 mm was recorded in July 2023 while the previous & all-time record is 232.6 mm in 2021, adding that this month’s precipitation is the second highest rainfall since the weather observatory was set up in 1978 or 2nd highest rainfall in 45 years.

At Kokernag, highest rainfall was recorded in the last eight years as a total rainfall of 198.0 mm was recorded in July 2023 while the previous record was 204.3 mm in 2015.

However, he said that the all-time record in Kokernag is 246.2 mm in 1995, therefore, the area has received the highest rainfall since 2016.

In Gulmarg, highest rainfall has been recorded in the last 13 years as a total rainfall of 144.8 mm was recorded in July 2023, he said, adding that the previous record was 220.9 mm in 2010 and the all-time record is 255.3 mm in 1993. “Therefore, Gulmarg a famous ski-resort has recorded highest rainfall since 2011,” he said. SRINAGAR: Some houses and other structures were damaged due to a cloudburst in the central Kashmir district of Ganderbal on Saturday morning, officials said.

They told news agency Kashmir Scroll that a cloudburst that occurred in the Gujjer Pati Prang area of Kangan this morning resulted in water entering some residential houses and causing damage in the area; however, there was no report of any loss of life in the incident.

Meanwhile, a police party reached the spot to monitor the situation. (KS)

SRINAGAR: More rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir even as weather department here on Saturday forecast “fairly widespread light to moderate” rain and thunderstorm during the next 24 hours.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that “isolated to scattered light rain/thunderstorm” was expected during subsequent two days in J&K. 

Regarding the rainfall in last 24 hours till 8:30 a.m. today, he said, Srinagar recorded 11.7mm, Qazigund 1.2mm, Pahalgam 8.1mm, Kupwara 8.8mm, Kokernag 2.4mm, Gulmarg 7.2mm, Jammu 33.8mm, Banihal traces, Batote 1.1mm, Katra 19.6mm, and Bhaderwah 9.8mm.  

As regards temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of Srinagar recorded a low of 16.3°C, Qazigund 16.6°C, Pahalgam 13.2°C, Kupwara town 14.8°C, Kokernag 16.7°C, Gulmarg 14.8°C, Jammu 24.5°C, Banihal 17.3°C, Batote 18.0°C, Katra 21.5°C and Bhaderwah 18.2°C, the official added. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Weather department on Wednesday forecast partly to generally cloudy weather during daytime with possibility of light to moderate thundershower at many places till July 28. 

A meteorological departmental official here told GNS that "isolated heavy rainfall" was expected over Jammu region  especially during late night and early morning period.

From July 29-31, he said, partly to generally cloudy is expected.

"There is risk of flash flood, mudslide, landslides during thevperiod," he warned.
He advised people to remain cautious and stay away from streams, rivers and other vulnerable spots during the period. (GNS)

Srinagar, July 08 (KNO): The annual Amarnath Yatra on Saturday faced another disruption  due to  bad weather conditions that triggered multiple landslides on 270 km-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district, officials said.

An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that fresh batch of pilgrims were not allowed to leave from Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu for Holy cave due to weather advisory and heavy rains in Kashmir valley. “The Yatra remain suspended on twin routes of Baltal and Pahalgam in valley for second consecutive day ”, he said.

He said overnight rains  triggered fresh landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at Panthyal, Mehar and other places in Ramban district blocking Srinagar- Jammu  highway. 

Meanwhile, the train services from Qazigund to Banihal railway track have  been suspended after water logging at Railway station Hiller Anantnag. (KNO)

SRINAGAR: Rains lashed parts of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing respite from heat wave conditions, even as the weatherman on Monday forecast more precipitation in the next few days.  

“Generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate rain is expected in Jammu and Kashmir during next 24 hours,” a meteorological department official here told GNS.

Regarding June 27, he said, intermittent rain was expected while some places in Jammu region may receive moderate to heavy shower in morning hours.

On June 28-19, he said, intermittent light rain was expected while on June 30, weather is expected to be partly cloudy. “Rain likely in the evening of June 30,” he added.

He said that rain may lead to localized flash floods and mudslides in vulnerable spots, especially in Jammu region.

“Water Level in rivers and streams/nallas are also expected to rise,” he said, adding, “all are requested to remain cautious and alert during active phase of Monsoon in J&K.”

In last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, he said, Srinagar recorded rainfall of 26.8 mm, Qazigund 50.2 mm, Pahalgam  10.7 mm, Kupwara 3.7 mm, Kokernag 20.4 mm, Gulmarg 12.2 mm, Jammu 41.2 mm, Banihal 32.8 mm, Batote 62.2 mm, Katra 30.8 mm, Bhaderwah 10.2 mm and Kathua 108.8 mm.

Regarding the temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 17.6°C against 19.8°C on the previous night but it was above normal by 0.3°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 16.6°C and it was above normal by 0.9°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 13.8°C against 13.1°C on the previous night and it was 3.1°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 15.4°C against 19.2°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 1.8°C for the north Kashmir area.

Kokernag recorded a low of 16.3°C against 20.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.0°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 11.0°C against 4.6°C on previous night and it was above normal by minus 0.4°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 23.2°C against 29.1°C on the previous night and it was 3.2°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 17.8°C (1.4°C above normal), Batote 16.7°C (1.3°C below normal), Katra 20.8°C (1.7°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 18.6°C (above normal by 2.2°C). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of 8.0°C and 18.9°C respectively, he said. (GNS)

A meteorological department official here said that Srinagar recorded a low of 11.3°C against 9.8°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 2.1°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 9.8°C against 8.4°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 2.2°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 4.6°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was 2.4°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 9.0°C against 8.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.7°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Kokernag recorded a low of 10.0°C against 8.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.2°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 7.2°C against 3.6°C on previous night and it was below normal by 1.5°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 22.5°C against 21.0°C on the previous night and it was 3.2°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 10.6°C (below normal by 2.7°C), Batote 13.3°C (2.1°C below normal), Katra 20.1°C (2.0°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 9.7°C (below normal by 2.9°C). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of 3.0°C and 7.7°C respectively, he said.

From June 5-12, he said, mainly dry weather is expected but a brief spell of showers and thunderstorms mainly towards evening can't be ruled out.  “There would be a gradual increase in temperature. Warmer days are ahead.” (GNS)
