SRINAGAR: After days of impermanent rains in plains and light snowfall over upper reaches, Meteorological department here on Tuesday forecast “mainly dry” weather along with rise in day temperature in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the next 24 hours, a MeT official here told GNS that mainly dry weather is expected even though “a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm in the late afternoon or evening can't be ruled out at some places, although chances are less.”

From May 10-12, he said, the weather is likely to be mainly dry. “There will be rise in temperature and warmer days are expected during the time.”  

From May 13-15, he said there was possibility of rain and thunderstorm at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir.

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.3°C against 6.7°C on the previous night and it was 4.4°C below normal for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 5.8°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 3.4°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 1.8°C against 2.6°C on previous night and it was 3.7°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 4.7°C against 5.2°C as on the previous night and it was 4.6°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Kokernag recorded a low of 4.0°C against 2.2°C on the previous night and it was 5.2°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 0.5°C against minus 0.4°C on previous night and it was 5.7°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 17.4°C against 16.3°C on the previous night and it was 5.6°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 4.8°C (below normal by 6.1°C), Batote 7.8°C (5.0°C below normal), Katra 14.5°C (5.2°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 4.0°C (below normal by 4.0°C). Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of 1.6°C, he added.  (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Amid ongoing weather vagaries, authorities have ordered for closure of Sinthan and Margan passes for all sorts of movements to avoid any exigency till May 9. 

"In view of predictions by the Metreological Department for wide spread and heavy 
rains and Snowfall in upper reaches, people of Tehsil Larnoo and outside tourists are advised to refrain from venturing in landslide and shooting stone prone areas", reads an advisory, as per GNS. 

"Moreover rainfall/thunderstorm/snowfall may lead to disruption of traffic on Sinthan pass and Margan pass roads. People are advised to refrain from travelling on these two roads on 8th and 9th of May 2023."

"Also in compliance to the directions of SDM Kokernag, SHO Larnoo and Naib
Tehsildar Larnoo hereby directed to setup naka at daksum and Gowran and restrict all kinds of vehicular traffic on Sinthan pass and Margan pass roads on 8th and 9th of May 2023", it reads.

"Moreover Assistant tourist officer Kokernag shall place 4 tourist guards at Daksum naka and Range officer Daksum shall place 4 forest guards at Gowran naka from 4pm to 9am on the days, when the aforementioned roads are closed", the advisory reads further. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Rains continue to lash Jammu and Kashmir even as the weather department forecast more precipitation in next 24 hours before “significant” improvement from May 9.   

“Today is going to be rainy, cloudy and cold in J&K. A significant improvement is very likely from May 9,” a meteorological department official here told GNS.

However he said while “mainly clear weather” was expected on May 9 but rain/thunderstorm in the late afternoon or evening can't be ruled out at some places.”

From May 10-15, he said weather was expected to be “mainly dry” along with a rise in temperature. “Expect warmer days,” he said.

The MeT department reiterated advisory to farmers to postpone spraying of orchards and harvesting of crops till May 8.

Tourists have been also advised to keep warm clothes and eatables ready as weather.

He said in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours, Srinagar received 1.6mm of rainfall, Qazigund 49.8mm, Pahalgam 15.1mm, Kupwara 8.2mm, Kukernag 62.2mm, Gulmarg 10.8mm, Jammu 2.7mm, Banihal 40.2mm, Batote 20.3mmKatra 6.4mm, and Bhaderwah 9.0mm.  

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.7°C against 6.5°C on the previous night and it was 4.0°C above normal for the summer capital.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that rain was expected at “many places” from May 6-8. Thereafter from May 9-12, he said, weather was expected to be “mainly dry”.

In fact, he said, the weather was favorable for “spraying and harvesting” and farmers can utilize the same today and May 9-12.

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 9.6°C against 10.3°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 7.8°C against 7.2°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 0.7°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 3.6°C against 2.0°C on previous night and it was 1.3°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Jammu recorded a low of 17.3°C against 17.6°C on the previous night and it was 5.3°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 7.7°C (below normal by 2.4°C), Batote 9.7°C (2.8°C below normal), Katra 15.1°C (4.1°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 8.0°C (below normal by 1.2°C). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 0.2°C and 5.4°C respectively, he added. (GNS)

A meteorological department official here told GNS that a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm was expected at scattered places towards late afternoon or evening today. 

From May 4-6, he said, “weather was likely to be fair to partly cloudy. A brief spell of rain/thunderstorm may occur towards late afternoon/evening.” 

From May 7-8, he said, rain was likely at “many places”. 

He asked tourists to keep warmer cloths, saying that the weather was likely to be colder rill May 8.

SRINAGAR: Weather department here on Monday forecast more rain and thunderstorm at many places of Jammu and Kashmir.  

While “gradual improvement” has been predicted from today afternoon onwards, the meteorological department here forecast widespread light to moderate rain (snow over upper reaches) and thunderstorm with hailstorm and gusty winds at a few places on May 2-3.

From May 4-7, a MeT official here told GNS that there was possibility of “brief spell of rain/thunderstorm at scattered places towards evening.” Overall, he said, the weather is likely to be erratic.  

Regarding rainfall during the last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, he said, Srinagar received 0.4mm, Gulmarg 0.4mm, Jammu 4.3mm, Batote 0.4mm, Katra 19.4mm and Bhaderwah 4.6mm.

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 11.3°C against 10.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.6°C above normal for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 7.8°C same as on the previous night and it was below normal by 0.7°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.
