SRINAGAR: The upper reaches of Kashmir Valley experienced the first snowfall of the season while plains were lashed by rain, ending a long dry spell that brought down the temperature on Monday, officials said.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said on Monday the higher reaches of the Kashmir valley received snowfall while widespread light to moderate rain lashed plains during the past 24 hours.

Isolated places in Jammu also received light rain during the period.

Reports of light snowfall were received from the Affarwat mountains of the skiing resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, Razdan Top in Bandipora, Sadna Top, Peer Panjal Range of Mountains, and other higher reaches of the Kashmir valley during the past 24 hours.

It was currently raining at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir and cloudy at the rest of the places, the MeT office said.

The MeT office predicted the weather will remain generally cloudy in J&K Monday while light rain will occur in scattered places in Kashmir and isolated places in the Jammu region.

There is a possibility of rain in isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir on September 26, while the weather will be mainly dry but warmer than today on September 27–28. Rain will likely be experienced at many places in Jammu and Kashmir on September 29–30.

Overall, there's “no” forecast of any major rain or snowfall for the next one week, the MeT office added.

Srinagar and its adjoining areas were lashed by rain, ending a long dry spell much to the delight of the people. It also brings down the temperature and forces people and tourists to wear warm clothes.

Srinagar received 18.3mm of rainfall, Qazigund 5.2mm, Pahalgam 17.9mm, Kupwara 3.0mm, Kokernag 3.0mm, and Gulmarg 20.6mm during the past 24 hours.

Srinagar recorded a low of 10.8 degrees Celsius, Qazigund 11.0 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 7.8 degrees Celsius, Kupwara 10.6 degrees Celsius, Kokernag 10.0 degrees Celsius, and Gulmarg 4.0 degrees Celsius on Monday. (UNI)

SRINAGAR: The weatherman on Friday forecast “hot and dry” weather to continue in Jammu and Kashmir for a week ahead.  

According to a meteorological department official, light to moderate rain and thunderstorm occurred at scattered places of J&K .

“Except brief spell of morning rain, weather is very likely to remain hot and dry in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours,” the official told GNS, adding, “Day temperature was likely to remain 1-2°C lower than yesterday.”

Regarding the forecast from September 16-22, he said, the weather was mainly going to be hot and dry but a brief spell of rain at isolated to scattered places of J&K cannot be ruled out.

“Due to absence of any strong Western Disturbance or Monsoon Current over J&K, there's no forecast of major rain for a week, at least.” (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Amid the frequent wet spells in Jammu and Kashmir this month, the summer capital of the Union Territory, Srinagar has broken all previous records as for the first time since 1891, the station has received a precipitation of 187.2 mm.

It has been after 131 years that Srinagar has witnessed such a huge precipitation in July month.

Independent Weather Forecaster, Faizan Arif Keng told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Srinagar records wettest July in at least 131 years, saying that the Rambagh Observatory in Srinagar received the highest total rainfall in July since its establishment in 1891, recording 187.2 mm of rainfall this July.

“The majority of this rainfall occurred during three spells: 20.0 mm on 08 July, 50.6 mm on 20 July, and 53.4 mm on 27 July,” he said, adding that before this year, the highest-ever rainfall recorded in the month of July was 182.6 mm in 1988.

Some of the areas in the Valley also received record-breaking precipitation in the month of July, he said, adding that Qazigund in South Kashmir has recorded the highest rainfall in this month in 28 years.

A total rainfall of 197.7 mm was recorded in July 2023 at Qazigund, he said, adding that the previous record and all-time record is 280.1 mm in 1995, saying that the highest rainfall has been recorded since 1996.

In Pahalgam, a precipitation of 225.5 mm was recorded in July 2023 while the previous & all-time record is 232.6 mm in 2021, adding that this month’s precipitation is the second highest rainfall since the weather observatory was set up in 1978 or 2nd highest rainfall in 45 years.

At Kokernag, highest rainfall was recorded in the last eight years as a total rainfall of 198.0 mm was recorded in July 2023 while the previous record was 204.3 mm in 2015.

However, he said that the all-time record in Kokernag is 246.2 mm in 1995, therefore, the area has received the highest rainfall since 2016.

In Gulmarg, highest rainfall has been recorded in the last 13 years as a total rainfall of 144.8 mm was recorded in July 2023, he said, adding that the previous record was 220.9 mm in 2010 and the all-time record is 255.3 mm in 1993. “Therefore, Gulmarg a famous ski-resort has recorded highest rainfall since 2011,” he said. SRINAGAR: More rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir even as weather department here on Saturday forecast “fairly widespread light to moderate” rain and thunderstorm during the next 24 hours.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that “isolated to scattered light rain/thunderstorm” was expected during subsequent two days in J&K. 

Regarding the rainfall in last 24 hours till 8:30 a.m. today, he said, Srinagar recorded 11.7mm, Qazigund 1.2mm, Pahalgam 8.1mm, Kupwara 8.8mm, Kokernag 2.4mm, Gulmarg 7.2mm, Jammu 33.8mm, Banihal traces, Batote 1.1mm, Katra 19.6mm, and Bhaderwah 9.8mm.  

As regards temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of Srinagar recorded a low of 16.3°C, Qazigund 16.6°C, Pahalgam 13.2°C, Kupwara town 14.8°C, Kokernag 16.7°C, Gulmarg 14.8°C, Jammu 24.5°C, Banihal 17.3°C, Batote 18.0°C, Katra 21.5°C and Bhaderwah 18.2°C, the official added. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Amid frequent wet spells in the ongoing month, Jammu and Kashmir has reported 15 cloudburst incidents in the month of July while the Meteorological department (MeT) is preparing data to see whether the incidents have witnessed an upward trend.

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Jammu and Kashmir has received excess rainfall of 27 per cent since June 01, 2023 to July 19, 2023 as the frequent rainfall has been reported in the Union Territory from last month.

Deputy Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told KNO that although the complete data has not been prepared but so far in this month, a total of 15 cloudburst incidents have been reported in July alone.

“It will be premature to speak whether such incidents have witnessed an upward trend as the data has not been finalized yet, which would help in comparing the figures of this year with previous years,” he said.

Several areas of J&K a few days ago were hit by flash floods triggered by the cloudburst incidents, which led to the damage of roads, some walls of the Government run schools in Kulgam and minor damage to the roads in Zirhama village in Kupwara.

A few cloudburst incidents were also reported in Katra recently leading to the cloudburst.

Moreover, the weatherman has predicted more rains in J&K till July 28, saying that the weather would remain partly to generally cloudy from July 25-July 28.

On July 25, MeT Deputy Director said that there is a possibility of light rain, thunderstorm during late night and early morning.

He added that from July 26-July 28, the weather would remain partly to generally cloudy during daytime while there is a possibility of light to moderate thunderstorm at many places with isolated heavy rainfall especially during late night and early morning.

In an advisory, the MeT has predicted risk of flash flood, mudslide, landslide during the period and advise people to remain cautious and stay away from Streams, Rivers and other vulnerable spots during the period. (KNO)

SRINAGAR: A day after Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir Valley recorded the season's hottest day, the night temperature too showed an upward trend and settled above normal in J&K on Wednesday.

A  meteorological department official here told GNS that hot and dry weather was likely to continue till June 23 even though there is possibility of “very light rain/thundershower at one or two places over Jammu and Kashmir.”    

From June 24-28, he said, generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate thunderstorms was expected at scattered to fairly widespread places in J&K.

Srinagar recorded a low of 19.7°C against 18.2°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 3.9°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 17.4°C against 16.2°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 3.1°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 10.6°C against 9.1°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 16.5°C against 14.1°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 2.4°C for the north Kashmir area.

Kokernag recorded a low of 18.0°C against 15.4°C on the previous night and it was 3.9°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 13.6°C against 10.2°C on previous night and it was above normal by 3.9°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 30.5°C against 26.1°C on the previous night and it was 4.4°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 19.0°C (3.9°C above normal), Batote 21.2°C (4.0°C above normal), Katra 25.2°C (3.2°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 19.2°C (above normal by 4.3°C). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of 9.0°C and 12.8°C respectively, he said. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Amid prediction for mainly dry weather and warmer days, night temperature in Jammu and Kashmir continued to hover below normal despite an increase on Monday.   

A meteorological department official here said that Srinagar recorded a low of 11.3°C against 9.8°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 2.1°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 9.8°C against 8.4°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 2.2°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 4.6°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was 2.4°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 9.0°C against 8.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.7°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Kokernag recorded a low of 10.0°C against 8.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.2°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 7.2°C against 3.6°C on previous night and it was below normal by 1.5°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 22.5°C against 21.0°C on the previous night and it was 3.2°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 10.6°C (below normal by 2.7°C), Batote 13.3°C (2.1°C below normal), Katra 20.1°C (2.0°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 9.7°C (below normal by 2.9°C). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of 3.0°C and 7.7°C respectively, he said.

From June 5-12, he said, mainly dry weather is expected but a brief spell of showers and thunderstorms mainly towards evening can't be ruled out.  “There would be a gradual increase in temperature. Warmer days are ahead.” (GNS)

SSRINAGAR: After days of intermittent rain, the weather is finally going to be “mainly clear” even though the possibility of late afternoon and evening showers have not been ruled out completely, according to the latest forecast by the meteorological department here on Saturday.

The weather department said that farmers can carry out farm operations till June 12.

“Mainly clear is expected during the next 24 hours. A brief spell of rain/thunder/lightning ‘may’ occur at some places towards late afternoon/evening, although chances are less,” a meteorological department official here told GNS.  

From June 4-12, he said, the weather is going to be mainly dry but a brief spell of showers and thunderstorm can't be ruled out.  He said there will be “gradual” increase in temperature.

“Farmers are advised to carry out all farm operations from today till 12th and start early morning as rain may occur anytime in the evening,” he said, adding, “People can plan outdoor activities this weekend and next week as risk of rain is less.”    

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 9.8°C, the same as on the previous night and it was below normal by 2.7°C for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 8.2°C against 10.0°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 2.9°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 5.1°C against 3.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 9.5°C against 9.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Kokernag recorded a low of 8.1°C against 9.9°C on the previous night and it was 3.0°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 3.2°C against 3.0°C on previous night and it was below normal by 4.4°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 18.6°C against 19.6°C on the previous night and it was 6.9°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

SRINAGAR: Weather department here on Monday forecast more rain and thunderstorm at many places of Jammu and Kashmir.  

While “gradual improvement” has been predicted from today afternoon onwards, the meteorological department here forecast widespread light to moderate rain (snow over upper reaches) and thunderstorm with hailstorm and gusty winds at a few places on May 2-3.

From May 4-7, a MeT official here told GNS that there was possibility of “brief spell of rain/thunderstorm at scattered places towards evening.” Overall, he said, the weather is likely to be erratic.  

Regarding rainfall during the last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, he said, Srinagar received 0.4mm, Gulmarg 0.4mm, Jammu 4.3mm, Batote 0.4mm, Katra 19.4mm and Bhaderwah 4.6mm.

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 11.3°C against 10.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.6°C above normal for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 7.8°C same as on the previous night and it was below normal by 0.7°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 4.7°C against 2.2°C on previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Kokernag recorded a low of 7.7°C against 8.8°C on the previous night and it was 0.7°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 4.0°C against 1.0°C on previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 8.7°C against 8.8°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

Jammu recorded a low of 18.7°C against 19.6°C on the previous night. It was 3.9°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

SRINAGAR: Amid forecast for erratic weather till May 4, the night temperatures continued to hover below normal in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Saturday.   

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 7.4°C against 6.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C below normal for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 7.2°C against 6.8°C on the previous night and it was 0.6°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 3.8°C against 4.2°C on previous night and it was 0.6°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Kokernag recorded a low of 6.4°C against 5.7°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 0.5°C against minus 1.0°C on previous night and it was 4.7°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 6.4°C against 5.6°C on the previous night and it was 1.4°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Jammu recorded a low of 19.7°C against 19.4°C on the previous night. It was 2.2°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 7.6°C (2.1°C below normal), Batote 8.4°C (3.6°C below normal), Katra 14.8°C (4.1°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 6.4°C (2.5°C below normal). Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 4.4°C, the official said.

Regarding rainfall in last 24 hours till 8:30 a.m. this morning, he said, Srinagar recorded 4.6mm, Qazigund 612.8mm, Pahalgam 12.9mm, Kupwara 0.8mm, Kokernag 8.2mm, Gulmarg 9.2mm, Banihal 10.2mm, Batote 0.6mm and Kathua 1.0mm.

About the forecast, he said, from April 29- May 2nd, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy. “Possibility of intermittent rain/thunderstorm at scattered places is expected towards late afternoon/evening (50% chance).”

From May 3-4, he said, there is possibility of widespread light to moderate rain and thunder in J&K. “Some places are likely to receive heavy rains,” he said. 

Overall, he said, weather is very likely to remain erratic till May 4.

 “Farmers are advised to postpone spraying of orchards till May 4,” he added.  (GNS)

The Meteorological Department predicts widespread light to moderate rain or snow over Kashmir valley and scattered light rain over Jammu division during the past 24 hours. The erratic weather with widespread light rains will continue for the next two days, the MeT office said.

It said weather likely to remain generally cloudy with possibility of rain or snow over higher reaches at some places coupled over Kashmir valley from April 26 to 28.

There is a possibility of rain or thunderstorm accompanied by strong gusty winds and hailstorm at some places, very likely at many places of Jammu and Kashmir during the period.

The MeT office has also urged the farmers to postpone spraying orchards till May 1.

However, the day temperature recorded 1.4 degree Celsius above normal of 22.3 degree Celsius. The day temperature all across the Kashmir valley was recorded above normal by 1 to 3 degree Celsius.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of 5.2 degree Celsius against 2.8 degree Celsius the previous night. It was 2.6 degree Celsius below normal for the gateway of Kashmir.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of 5.2 degree Celsius which was 2.6 degree Celsius below normal of 7.8 degree Celsius on Wednesday for the tourist hot spot.

Kokernag had a low of 3.0 degree Celsius which was 5.1 degree Celsius below normal while Kupwara recorded a low of 5.2 degree Celsius and it was 2.6 degree Celsius below normal for the frontier Kashmir district.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of 3.2 degree Celsius against 4.6 degree Celsius the previous night and it was 1.0 degree Celsius below normal for the famous ski resort, the MeT office said. (UNI)

SRINAGAR: Amid forecast for generally cloudy weather and rains till April 28, night temperature recorded a drop at most places and settled below normal in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.  

 “From April 26-28, weather is expected to be generally cloudy with possibility of intermittent light rain with thunder/lightning (light snowfall over higher reaches of Central and North, Northwestern parts of Kashmir) at many places with peak intensity on April 27,” said a meteorological department official here. He said there was also possibility of snow over upper reaches at some places as well as likelihood of moderate intensity rainfall at few places during the time.

Strong gusty wind towards late afternoon/evening with possibility of hailstorm can’t be ruled out during the period, he said.

“From 29-30th April, generally cloudy weather with light rain is expected at a few places for short period,” he said, adding, “there is no forecast of major rain/snowfall till the end of April.”

He also urged farmers to postpone spraying orchards till May 1.
