Srinagar-Leh Highway Restored for One-Way Traffic

SRINAGAR: Authorities on Friday restored the traffic movement on the Srinagar-Leh highway; however, only one way traffic has been allowed to pass.

An official told News Agency Kashmir Scroll that as fresh snowfall forces authorities to close the main highway in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, how'ver on Srinagar-Leh highway traffic has been restored one-sided after the snow was cleared on the highway. The officer said that from Kargil towards Srinagar, traffic has been allowed to play today.

Pertinently, the higher reaches of Kashmir on Friday morning experienced a fresh spell of snowfall, while the plains received rains, leading to a significant drop in the maximum temperature. (KS)

Traffic on Mughal Road Suspended Due to Inclement Weather

SRINAGAR: Traffic on SSG and Mughal road have been suspended due to inclement weather.

An official told news agency Kashmir Scroll that traffic has been suspended on both roads keeping in view safety of passengers.

He said that once weather will permit, traffic on both roads will resume soon.(KS)

E-challan To Start At 25 Traffic Intersections From June 23 As CS Reviews Traffic Management In Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta today chaired a meeting at Civil Secretariat here to review the traffic arrangements in the Srinagar City. He also reviewed the status of traffic movement on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway for the upcoming Shri AmarnathJi Yatra and the ongoing tourist season.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary PWD, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Commissioner SMC, IGP traffic, DIG traffic, DC Srinagar, SSP traffic, VC J&K LCMA and others concerned.

Deputy Commissioners of Anantnag and Ramban attended the meeting through video conferencing.

While chairing the meeting, Dr Mehta stressed upon the officers to take all necessary measures to smoothen the flow of traffic in Srinagar city and all other areas with zero tolerance against offences like wrong parking and lane indiscipline. He expressed concern on the traffic snarls around the Dal Lake area and directed the concerned to take corrective measures in this regard at an earliest.

Maintaining that checking points should not create unnecessary problems for the commuters, CS directed the traffic authorities to make their checking methods more people friendly. He said that there should be no halting of buses at their will and these should stop only at designated locations. He said that wrong parking has to be dealt with strictly and any vehicle found wrongly parked should be towed away.

The Chief Secretary also inquired about the traffic arrangements for the upcoming AmarnathJi yatra and said that a proper plan should be framed to ensure smooth flow of traffic. He said that the coming months should not witness any traffic jams and all preparations have to be made in advance to plug any loopholes.

Dr Mehta enjoined upon the officers that the experience of yatris on pilgrimage and other tourists should be pleasant so that they promote Jammu and Kashmir as a tourism destination back home.

He also asked the traffic department to hold a stakeholders consultation and formulate SOPs which all stakeholders comply with without need for coercive measures.

The Chief Secretary also inquired about the progress of Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) in Srinagar and directed the concerned to detect traffic violations through the upgraded system. He said that the traffic department should start generating e-challans against the violators from June 23 at the intersections which are fully automated.

Under the Smart City Project, the authorities have installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other devices in Srinagar. The cameras have begun sending live video and photo feeds of traffic violations to a command and control centre.

It was informed that the ITMS cameras have been installed about 60 intersections in Srinagar out of which 25 are fully ready to start generating e-challans.

Dr Mehta also asked the Deputy Commissioners of Anantnag and Ramban districts to examine the routes in their respective districts and see that all critical, protective work have been carried out to ensure smooth movement of vehicles. (GNS)

Introduction of e-rickshaws in Srinagar is going to be a prospective game-changer for the city's transportation system. Just today 25 new routes have been designated by the UT administration for promotion of this environment friendly mode of transportation. As of now there are around 500 e-rikshaws in the Srinagar city. These electric rickshaws are set become a popular mode of transportation for the people of Srinagar as they are quickly replacing the already existing mode of transportation like Matadors, mini buses and auto-rickshaws. The introduction of e-rickshaws in Srinagar has been a much-needed breath of fresh air for the city's public transportation system. E-rickshaws are a relatively new form of transportation that is both eco-friendly and cost-efficient, making them an excellent alternative to the traditional cycle rickshaws that have been prevalent in the city for decades. The cost of operating an e-rickshaw is much lower than that of a traditional rickshaw, as they do not require fuel and have lower maintenance costs. This has made it possible for more people to afford transportation and has improved access to transportation for those who previously could not afford it. The city is as well struggling with high levels of pollution caused by the exhaust fumes of the traditional rickshaws. The eco-friendly e-rickshaws run on electricity, which means they do not produce any harmful emissions. This might help in the contribution of improving the air quality in the city. Moreover, the e-rickshaws have also provided employment opportunities for many people which has created jobs for many locals in Srinagar. The e-rickshaws are also contributing to reducing traffic congestion in Srinagar. The city's narrow and congested roads were always a challenge for the traditional rickshaws, which had to navigate through the traffic to reach their destinations. The e-rickshaws, on the other hand, are smaller and more nimble, which makes them ideal for navigating through the city's narrow lanes and alleys. E-Rikshaws Designated For 25 Additional Routes to Ensure Smooth Traffic Movement In Srinagar

SRINAGAR: In a bid to ensure hassle free movement of vehicular traffic in Srinagar, the Regional Transport Authority on Tuesday said to have designated 25 additional routes for e-rickshaws in addition to the 18 routes already notified to ply in and around the City. The decision has been taken in the interest of the functioning of e-rickshaws to provide for a smoother public transport service. Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir, while sharing the details, citing a notification, told the news agency that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways notification No. S.O. 2812(E) dated 30.08.2016, provides that “the provisions of sub-section (1) of section 66 (dealing with permit for transport vehicles) of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 shall not apply to any transport vehicle of the category e-cart and e-rickshaw as defined in section 2A of the aforesaid Act used, or to be used, for the purpose of carriage of goods and passengers with their personal luggage respectively, provided that the State Governments authorities may impose restrictions on plying of these vehicles in specific areas or specific roads.” “Whereas, the Regional Transport Authority in its last meeting had defined 18 (eighteen) routes listed at Annexure-A for plying e-rickshaws in Srinagar. Whereas, the number of e-rickshaws in the city has increased substantially and in the interest of functioning of e-rickshaws for smooth public transport service, it was felt imperative to define the additional routes for e-rickshaws.” “The issue was considered in the meeting of Regional Transport Authority, Srinagar, convened on 13-03-2023, and it was decided that in addition to the already notified routes, the e-rickshaws shall be allowed to ply on some additional routes in and around Srinagar city”, the traffic regulatory officer said adding now therefore, the e-Rickshaws shall be allowed to ply on the following additional routes with the restriction that no e-Rickshaw shall ply anywhere on the National Highway and from Tengpora Bypass to Sonwar and Jehangir Chowk to Airport road segments in the Srinagar City. “The routes have been carefully selected, taking into consideration the busy areas, the most popular destinations, and the residential areas. The e-rickshaws have been allowed to operate on 45 routes, covering almost every part of the city.” The first route runs from Parimpora Bypass (Toyota Showroom) to Dharmunnah. The second one starts from Pantha Chowk and goes to Zewan via Gamander BSF Camp. The third and fourth routes start from Shalteng and go to Sharifabad and Kalunna respectively. The fifth route covers Shalteng to Umerabad/Mustafabad. The sixth and seventh routes start from Batmaloo and go to Tengpora via Dobhi Mohalla, Firdous Abad Colony, and to Allochi Bagh Gurduwara. The eighth and ninth routes start from JVC and go to Qamarwari via HIG Colony, MIG Boat Colony, and Cement Bridge to Palapora via Guzarbal Colony. The tenth and eleventh routes run from Khumani Chowk to Hakkarmula and Bemina Bye Pass to Khumani Chowk. The twelfth route runs from Hamdania Colony to Sharifabad via Durbal. The thirteenth and fourteenth routes start from Maharaj Gunj and go to Chattabal via Aali Kadal Watal Kadal Safakadal and Cement Bridge via Malik Sahib Ghaisi Mohalla and Zaina Kadal to Shaheed Gunj. The fifteenth route runs from Nawa Kadal to DC Office via Jama Latta Nawab Bazar Zaldagar Sona Masjid Karfalli Mohalla. The sixteenth route starts from Mirwaiz Manzil and goes to Wazapora, Nawa Kadal, Jamallata, Nawabazar, and SMHS Hospital. The seventeenth and eighteenth routes start from Gojwara-Nowhatta-Malkah-Rainawari and Rawalpora to Baghi Mehtab via Flood Channel Road. The nineteenth and twentieth routes run from Rawalpora to Peerbagh via Flood Channel Road and Kralpora to Wanabal. The twenty-first and twenty-second routes start from Tengpora Bridge to Narkara and Hyderpora Chowk to Shah-Anwar Colony/Gulbarg Colony/Gul-Bahar Colony. The twenty-third and twenty-fourth routes run from Chanapora Bridge via Gulshan Nagar to Baghi Mehtab Housing Colony and Chanapora to Ahmad Hospital via Methan. The twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth routes run from Srinagar Railway Station to National Highway Bypass and Nowgam Bypass to Arebagh, Magraypora, Mochua. The twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth routes start from B.K Pora to Kralpora and Nowgam Bypass to B. K Pora. The twenty-ninth and thirtieth routes run from Sempora to Balhama via Zaffron Colony and Ram Bagh to Jawahar Nagar and Rajbagh via Bund. The thirty-first route runs from Broadway to Indra Nagar, among others. (GNS)
