SRINAGAR: After days of incessant rains in plains and snowfall over upper reaches leading to the wintry conditions, the weatherman on Wednesday predicted mainly dry weather and “warmer” days till October 21.   While there were foggy  conditions in plains of Kashmir valley and other valleys of J&K and partly cloudy at rest of the places in J&K this morning, the weather started to improve as the day progressed.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that weather was going to be mainly dry from October 19-21. “The days will be warmer,” he said.

However, he said, from October 22-23, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy. “There is possibility of light rain/snowfall (over higher reaches) at scattered places of J&K during these days,” he said, adding, “From October 24-28, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy.” Overall, he said, there is no forecast of any major rain and snowfall for the next 10 days in J&K and Ladakh.

He said that the weather was favourable for harvesting and all outdoor activities.

In the past few days, there was considerable drop in mercury with Srinagar recording a maximum of 11.6°C on Tuesday which was 10.1°C below normal for the summer capital.  

There are reports of fresh light snowfall from Gulmarg, Sadnatop, Peer ki Gali, Simthan Pass, Gurez, Tulail, Sonamarg, the Zojila axis on the Srinagar-Leh Highway besides the upper reaches.

Also Jammu city recorded a maximum of 17.8°C on October 17 which was 13.5°C below normal for the winter capital.  (GNS)

SRINAGAR: After overnight rains in plains and snowfall over upper reaches, the weather was clear at most places in Jammu and Kashmir with the meteorological department on Tuesday predicting mainly clear skies till October 13.   

A meteorological department official here told GNS that a brief spell of rain/snowfall over higher reaches may occur but “chances are less.”

He said that weather is expected to be mainly dry fr4om October 11 to 13.

From October 14-17, he said, intermittent light to moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches was likely at many places of Jammu and Kashmir and its chances ranged between 60-70%.

Regarding the rainfall from last evening till 0830 hours today, he said, Srinagar received 16.7mm, Qazigund 17.2mm, Pahalgam 16.6mm, Kupwara 3.6mm, Kokernbag 21.0mm, Gulmarg 26.6mm, Jammu 27.5mm, Banihal 30mm, Batote 35.2mm, Katra 32.4mm and Bhaderwah 18.4mm. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: The weatherman on Friday forecast “hot and dry” weather to continue in Jammu and Kashmir for a week ahead.  

According to a meteorological department official, light to moderate rain and thunderstorm occurred at scattered places of J&K .

“Except brief spell of morning rain, weather is very likely to remain hot and dry in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours,” the official told GNS, adding, “Day temperature was likely to remain 1-2°C lower than yesterday.”

Regarding the forecast from September 16-22, he said, the weather was mainly going to be hot and dry but a brief spell of rain at isolated to scattered places of J&K cannot be ruled out.

“Due to absence of any strong Western Disturbance or Monsoon Current over J&K, there's no forecast of major rain for a week, at least.” (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Heat wave conditions showed no signs of abating as Srinagar recorded season’s second highest day temperature in 132 years on Tuesday, officials said.

A meteorological department official here told GNS  that summer capital of J&K, Qazigund and Kokernag recorded record breaking severe heat wave. 

“Srinagar recorded  maximum temperature of 34.2°C, which is 6.0°C above normal. This is the 2nd highest maximum temperature ever recorded in September since 1891,” he said, adding, “It has broken 53 years old record of 33.8°C recorded on  01 September 1970.” 

The all-time highest temperature of 35.0°C was recorded on 18 September 1934, he said. 

Qazigund the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded maximum Temperature of 33.2°C which was 6.7°C above normal and broke previous highest maximum temperature 32.8°C recorded  on 12 September 2019.”

“Today's Temperature is highest since 1956 for Qazigund,” he said
Regarding Kokernag, he said, that south Kashmir place recorded maximum of 32.0°C and it was highest in 46 years since 1977.

Regarding the forecast, he said, heat wave to severe likely to continue on Kashmir for another 4-5 days. 

He said reason for severe heat wave was prolong dry spell with less moisture due to stable atmospheric conditions. 

Also, deficit of rainfall was likely to continue for next 1 week, atleast in J&K. (GNS)

From May 10-12, he said, the weather is likely to be mainly dry. “There will be rise in temperature and warmer days are expected during the time.”  

From May 13-15, he said there was possibility of rain and thunderstorm at isolated places in Jammu and Kashmir.

Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.3°C against 6.7°C on the previous night and it was 4.4°C below normal for the summer capital.

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 5.8°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 3.4°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 1.8°C against 2.6°C on previous night and it was 3.7°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 4.7°C against 5.2°C as on the previous night and it was 4.6°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Kokernag recorded a low of 4.0°C against 2.2°C on the previous night and it was 5.2°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 0.5°C against minus 0.4°C on previous night and it was 5.7°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

Jammu recorded a low of 17.4°C against 16.3°C on the previous night and it was 5.6°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 4.8°C (below normal by 6.1°C), Batote 7.8°C (5.0°C below normal), Katra 14.5°C (5.2°C below normal) and Bhaderwah 4.0°C (below normal by 4.0°C). Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of 1.6°C, he added.  (GNS)

Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 6.2°C against 6.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 4.6°C against 3.6°C on the previous night and it was 1.8°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Kokernag recorded a low of 10.6°C against 9.4°C on the previous night and it was 4.5°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 7.0°C against 5.4°C on the previous night and it was 5.5°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 6.2°C against 5.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

Jammu recorded a low of 21.2°C against 20.3°C on the previous night. It was 2.0°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 9.3°C (above normal by 1.1°C), Batote 13.2°C (above normal by 2.7°C), Katra 19.4°C (2.9°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 8.9°C (1.9°C below normal). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 0.2°C and 3.3°C respectively, he said.

Regarding the forecast, he said, isolated very light rain and thunderstorms were expected in the next 24 hours.

He said from April 16-17, generally cloudy weather with intermittent light rain, thunderstorm and lightning “with occasional moderate intensity rains for short period” scattered to fairly widespread places of Kashmir and a few places of Jammu division.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that no large change was expected and mainly dry weather was expected till April 16. Generally cloudy sky with possibility of light rain was likely for three days thereafter, he said. 

Regarding the temperature, the MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 6.6°C against 5.1°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the summer capital.
