SRINAGAR: Two persons including an army soldier on Thursday slipped into River Chenab and are feared dead in Doda district, officials said.

They said that about 1200 hours, the do identified as 25-year-old Rohit Singh (serving in Army) son of Remesh Kumar and Sunil Kumar (24) son of Ram Raj, both residents of Durga Nagar Khallani Doda drowned in Chenab River near Durga Nagar while they were washing their hands after performing last rites (cremation) of their relative on the bank of the water body.

Soon after getting information, a police party headed by Dy.SP Headquarters Doda rushed to the spot and along with locals and teams of SDRF launched a rescue operation.

Confirming it, SSP Doda Abdul Qayoom told GNS that hitherto there was trace of the duo and efforts are underway to find them. (GNS)

Asenior police officer told news agency Kashmir Scroll said that two persons namely Rohit Singh S/O Remesh Kumar (serving in Army) age 25 yrs and Sunil Kumar S/O Ram Raj age 24 yrs both resident of Durga Nagar Khallani (Doda) drowned in Chanab River near village Durga Nagar while they were washing their hands after performing last rights of their relative on the bank of River Chanab.

He said police officers are on Spot and supervising the search and rescue operation launched by Police and team of SDRF along with locals of the area.(KS)

SRINAGAR: Army on Tuesday continued the rescue operationto retrieve the body who drowned in flood channel in Srinagar on Sunday An official told news agency, Kashmir Scroll that an eight year old boy identified as Ikhlas son of Ab Qayoom resident of Hamdaniya Colony drowned in flood channel near Mithayi Bund Hamdaniya colony on Sunday.

He said that soon after he drowned, locals along SDRF team and police started rescue operation, however, they failed to retrieve the body of minor on day 02. Operation was put on halt for night and it resumed on Monday where army also joined the operation, they said.

They also didn't got success to retrieve body on Monday and restarted operation on Tuesday, (KS)

SRINAGAR: District administration Anantnag has launched a widescale rescue operation to evacuate nearly twenty families stuck alongside their livestock at Margan Top in Kokernag area, amid ongoing inclement weather conditions across the region. 

"A joint rescue operation comprising of revenue, police, army, CRPF, Medical, ASH, SRTC was launched to respond to distress call at Nawkan, near Margan Top", SDM Kokernag, who is leading the rescue operation under the overall supervision of DC Anantnag, told GNS over phone. 

"It is estimated that there are some 10 to 20 families with livestocks stuck there", the official said adding they have so far rescued 2 dozen people and around 20 farm animals.

"Another team is on way with JCB machinery to tackle any eventuality", the official said. 

"We have established a temporary shelter at Gawran and also a medical camp through army as a contingency measure", the official added. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Body of an 18-year-old girl was recovered from a river in Poonch district and two of her cousin sisters were rescued, officials said on Saturday.   

They said as per information, three cousin sisters from Jandrola area of Tehsil Mandi left their home for paying visit to Guntriyan Ziarat of Sain Baba Marian Sahib on Friday morning. However, as they did not return to their homes till evening, their family members started searching for them. During the searches, at around 22:15 hours, two girls were found near SK Bridge Poonch while another was found dead nearby in the river.

Meanwhile, they said, the police party of Police Station Poonch rushed to the spot and recovered the girl’s body and shifted it to District Hospital Poonch for post-mortem.

Meanwhile the two girls were taken to hospital and police also recorded their statement, they said.

Station House Officer Ranjit Rao told GNS that girls have alleged that they were being allegedly pestered by their respective families and as such decided to end their lives. “As per their statement, they jumped together but one of them died,” he said. However, he said, further investigations in the matter are going on. (GNS)
