Nizamuddin Bhat Condemns the Gruesome Murder of Budgam Woman

SRINAGAR: J&K Peoples Conference Chairman Parliamentary Committee and former legislator Nizamud-din-Bhat today strongly condemned the dastardly and gruesome murder of a 30-year old woman in Soibug, Budgam.

“It is deeply troubling to hear about the killing of a woman in Soibug and the brutal manner in which her body was mutilated. Such heinous acts should never be tolerated, and the perpetrators should be brought to justice”, Bhat said.

Bhat expressed his solidarity with the family of the deceased and prayed for peace to the departed soul. He said that the family must show patience and strength during this dark hour of loss.

While terming the increase in criminal activities alarming and disheartening, Bhat said that it is important for authorities to take swift action and bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice.
“It is also important to ensure that measures are taken to prevent such incidents from happening in the future”, he added.

While exhorting the society to take serious note of rising crimes and the deviation from the values we are known for, Bhat said that it is essential that we work collectively towards preventing such acts of violence and promoting respect for human life and dignity.

“As a responsible community, we must stand together in condemning violence and showing solidarity with the family of the victim. It is our collective responsibility to work towards creating a safe and just society, which has no place for such heinous acts of violence”, he added. (KNB)

Budgam Murder Case: Where is INSANIYAT Heading to...

What we used to hear through Crime Patrol type shows on TV, Kashmir witnessed the first of its kind horrendous case of the murder of a 30-year-old woman in Budgam district on March 7, 2023. The perpetrator, who was known to the woman’s family later chopped off the body with a knife and scattered them around the places.
The incident has sent shock waves in the region far and wide. People in Budgam have taken to the streets to register their protest to express their disgust and the degradation of the society that once was as an example for its simplicity and social amity.
The region that has always been known for its culture of mutual respect, hospitality, and women’s safety has seen a surge in cases of domestic violence in the last few years. Domestic violence in the form of burning women spouses in the four walls of the in-law's home, murdering a woman, and then chopping off the body parts is not only new to the people here but reprehensible and hard to digest the fact.
There has been widespread condemnation from people in and around the district and an overwhelming outpour of anger over social media as well, with many calling for swift and stringent action against the perpetrators.
Earlier, a few years ago, it was never a topic of discussion in Kashmir as of today but it has been happening quite often now with more intensity in the crime and with more impunity as such rampant cases are being witnessed today.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)‘s "Crime in India 2016" report reveals that in 94.6 percent of cases, the perpetrators were none other than the victim's relatives including brothers, fathers, grandfathers, sons, or acquaintances.
A troubling observation is that while cases being reported have increased over the last five to six years, conviction rates, unfortunately, have remained stagnant to slightly falling.
Despite the existence of laws and regulations that are meant for women safeguarding, the fact is that such incidents continue to occur and it has time and again proven the failure of the system to effectively address or even approach the issue.
It has once again exposed the reality of our society and yet again showed us a mirror of who we have become as humans with no compassion left in us anymore.
The biggest victims of the conflict have been women working in the confined four walls of their homes. However, it's slowly changing and they have taken the front seat but it has taken them some struggle and courage to do that.
Coming out of the patriarchal and conservative mindset which is still prevalent in some families, these young females are working silently braving all the difficulties inflicted upon them in the form of incessant political instability and other factors adding to it.
For years, Kashmiri women have been trying their best to come out from their melancholic state of mind for their survival and to a great extent they are not only surviving but also bringing laurels in almost every field; from academics to sports but this incident has further highlighted the insecurity and vulnerability of women in this part of the world and pushed them back instead of creating more comfortable spaces for women, unfortunately.
The nature of the crime has yet again crushed the potential aspirations of Kashmiri women.
Sexual abuse has been neglected for a long by various segments of different societies where social norms and cultural anecdotes have played an active role in suppressing these issues.
Media has also been partially responsible as far as its nature of reporting and sensationalizing the serious issue of violence against women. These practices have affected the response of law enforcement agencies toward these issues of violence.
The incident underscores the need for more concrete and stricter efforts to address the root causes of the problem as there are a number of necessary changes to combat violence against women and to bring about a change in societal attitudes and behaviors towards them.
The justice system remains vulnerable to political pressures and allows many of the accused to go scot-free - only one in four cases of rape in India end in conviction. The incompetent investigation of such crimes leaves so many loopholes. The perpetrators then seem fearless in doing anything like this.
Therefore, it is essential that the authorities take steps to ensure the safety and security of women where it can be stopped to be normalized and basically provide them with better protection in regards to the execution of the already existing laws including the legal punishment to ensure the safety and security of women.
All said and done, there’s much to introspect about when it comes to women, their choices, and their personal space in Kashmir and people need to realize that and as soon as they do, the world will look a bit bearable to live in.
