SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir is braced for rain in plains and snow over higher reaches even as night temperature recorded a drop on Friday. 

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a minimum of 7.1°C against 8.9°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C below normal for the summer capital of JK for this time of the year.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 4.8°C against 6.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of 1.2°C against 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.6°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 4.8°C against 6.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C above normal, the official said.

Kupwara town recorded a low of 5.8°C against 8.1°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C below normal there, the official said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.5°C against 0.6°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 1.0°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Jammu, he said, recorded a minimum of 16.7°C and it was above normal by 2.5°C for the winter capital of J&K.

Banihal recorded a low of 9.4°C, Batote 10.3°C and Bhaderwah 6.3°C, he said.

Regarding the forecast, he said, today the weather is likely to be partly to generally cloudy with light Rain and Snow over higher reaches with thunder at scattered places towards afternoon or evening.

On April 13-14, he said, generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and snow over higher reaches is expected at many places with heavy rain/snow/thunder/lightning/hailstorm and gusty winds expected at isolated places.

From April 15-17, he said, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected with light rain in plains and snow over higher reaches at few places.

From April 18-20, partly cloudy weather with light rain or snow is expected at many places.

The weather department official also urged farmers to suspend farm operations and said that there is likelihood of temporary disruption of surface transportation over few  higher reaches during April 13-14.

“Travellers & Tourists are advised to plan accordingly,” he said, adding, “Temporary water logging is also expected in few low lying areas.” He said there is also possibility of landslides and mudslides besides shooting stones. (GNS)

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a minimum of 5.6°C against 5.8°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C below normal for the summer capital of JK for this time of the year.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 3.4°C against 6.4°C on the previous night and it was 2.3°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of 0.2°C against 2.8°C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 6.6°C against 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.2°C above normal, the official said.

Kupwara town recorded a low of 3.6°C against 5.4°C on the previous night and it was 2.5°C below normal there, the official said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 1.2°C against 0.0°C on the previous night and it was above normal by 0.7°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Jammu, he said, recorded a minimum of 17.3°C and it was above normal by 0.5°C for the winter capital of J&K.

Banihal recorded a low of 6.8°C, Batote 10.9°C and Bhaderwah 7.0°C, he said.

Regarding the forecast, he said, the weather is expected to be generally dry during the next 24 hours.

“On 10th April, weather is likely to be partly to generally cloudy with light rain/snow (higher reaches) at many places towards evening,” he said.

From April 11-12, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected with light rain/snow (higher reaches) at few places.

“From April 13-15, generally cloudy weather is expected with light to moderate rain/snow (higher reaches) at many places with thunder/lightning/hailstorm and gusty winds at few places.”

From April 16-17, he said, partly to generally cloudy weather with light rain/snow (higher reaches) is expected at few places. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: While rains lashed plains and higher reaches including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall, the weatherman on Thursday forecast another wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir from March 22-24.      

A meteorological department official here told GNS that generally dry weather was expected till March 20.

In last 24 hours till 08:30 a.m. this morning, the MeT official said that plains received rainfall with Srinagar receiving 9.1mm during the time, Qazigund 24.6mm, Pahalgam 15.6mm (3 cms of snow), Kupwara 14.9mm, Kokernag 18.1mm, Jammu 1.6mm, Banihal 44.8mm, Batote 43.6mm, Katra 4.6mm  and Kathua 14.6mm.  He said Gulmarg received 22 cms of fresh snowfall during the time.     

Regarding temperature, he said, most places witnessed a drop with Srinagar recording a minimum of 4.4°C against 5.4°C on the previous night.

It was above normal by 0.7°C for the summer capital of JK for this time of the year, the MeT official said.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 1.8°C against 3.4°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 1.3°C against minus 0.5°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that there is also possibility of light rain and snow at a few places on Thursday. Generally dry weather is expected from March 15-20, he said.  

Regarding temperature, he said, most places witnessed a drop with Srinagar recording a minimum of 5.4°C against 5.9°C on the previous night.

It was above normal by 1.7°C for the summer capital of JK for this time of the year, the MeT official said.

A meteorological department official told GNS that Srinagar recorded a minimum of 6.3°C against 2.2°C on the previous night.

It was above normal by 3.0°C for the summer capital of JK for this time of the year, the MeT official said.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 4.4°C against 1.4°C on the previous night and it was 2.2°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of 2.2°C against minus 2.5°C on the previous night and it was 3.6°C above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 4.4°C against 1.8°C on the previous night and it was 2.5°C above normal, the official said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 3.5°C against minus 3.4°C on the previous night and it was 2.1°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 1.3°C against 0.5°C on the previous night and it was 0.6°C below normal, the official said.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 0.6°C against minus 1.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a minimum of 4.5°C against previous night’s 2.1°C. It was below normal by 3.0°C for the summer capital of J&K for this time of the year, the MeT official said.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 2.4°C against minus 1.0°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of 1.3°C against minus 4.4°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 2.3°C against minus 0.4°C on the previous night and the temperature was above normal by minus 0.4°C for the place, the official said.

Kupwara town recorded a low of minus 2.3°C against 1.7°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C below normal there, the official said.

MeT has also issued an advisory cautioning about the disruption of surface and air transport in the valley.

It said widespread moderate to heavy rain/snow is expected in Jammu and Kashmir till the afternoon of March 3 with its peak activity on March 2.

 “The above system is most likely to cause heavy to very heavy rain/snow over Pirpanjal Range of Jammu division and middle & higher reaches of Kashmir Division (Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shupiyan-Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg and Kupwara-Sachna Pass),” read the advisory.

The weather activity may lead to disruption of surface and air transport including Jammu-Srinagar highway and other major roads of middle and higher reaches of J&K.

It urged the people in snow bound areas to avoid venturing into sloppy and Avalanche prone areas.

 “Chances of landslides, mudslides & shooting stones most likely over the vulnerable areas,” it said, adding, “Farmers are advised to withhold all farm operations during 1st week of March.”

While ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter ended on January 29 and 20-day-long winter period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ ended on February 19, Kashmir is the middle 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which culminates on March 1. (GNS)

Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 1.0°C against 2.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.4°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 4.4°C against minus 2.4°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 0.4°C against 1.1°C on the previous night and the temperature was below normal by 1.7°C for the place, the official said.

Kupwara town recorded a low of minus 1.7°C against 1.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C below normal there, the official said.

It said that an active Western disturbance is most likely to affect J&K and adjoining areas from today evening/night onwards.

Under the influence of this system, it said, widespread moderate rain/snow is expected in Jammu and Kashmir from February 29th night/early morning of March 1 till the afternoon of March 3 with its peak activity on March 2.

“The above system is most likely to cause heavy to very heavy rain/snow over Pirpanjal Range of Jammu division and middle & higher reaches of Kashmir Division (Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shupiyan-Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg and Kupwara-Sachna Pass),” read the advisory.

A meteorological department official here told GNS that the temperature in Srinagar increased by over two degrees Celsius from previous night’s minus 4.7°C and it was below normal by 3.8°C for the summer capital of J&K for this time of the year.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 3.2°C against minus 4.4°C on the previous night and it was 2.2°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, the MeT official said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 7.0°C against minus 7.9°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 6.4°C, same as on the previous night, he said. The minimum temperature was 4.9°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, the MeT official said.

Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 10.3°C against minus 11.9°C on the previous night and it was 4.1°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 5.0°C against minus 4.5°C on the previous night and the temperature was below normal by 3.0°C for the place, the official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 44.9°C against minus 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.9°C below normal there, the official said.

Gulmarg, the official said, recorded a low of minus 9.0°C against minus 12.0°C on the previous night and the temperature was below normal by 2.3°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir.

Jammu, he said, recorded a minimum of 5.3°C and it was below normal by 4.2°C for the winter capital of J&K.  

Banihal recorded a low of 2.0°C, Batote 3.3°C and Bhaderwah minus 1.6°C, he said.

Regarding the forecast, the MeT official said that weather is expected to be dry till February 17.

“Overall, dry weather is expected till February 17 with occasionally cloudy evening during February 14.”

Regarding the outlook during February 18-20, he said, there is possibility of light snow and rain.

As ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter ended on January 29, Kashmir is presently in the middle of 20-day-long winter period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that ends on February 19 and is followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which starts from February 20 to March 1.
