SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Sunday attended the ET Women Conclave-2024 organised by The Times Group, at Gurugram.

On the occasion, the Lt Governor saluted the Nari Shakti and lauded their significant contribution in growth journey of Naya Jammu Kashmir.

Highlighting women-led development in Jammu Kashmir, the Lt Governor said the women entrepreneurship in rural and far-flung areas of the Union Territory is enabling Nari Shakti to foster change at the grassroots.

“Women entrepreneurs are shaping the future of JK. We are witnessing extraordinary accomplishments in ITeS, MSMEs, Service Sector, agro-based industry and Handicrafts because of women entrepreneurs’ single-minded pursuit of excellence and hard work,” the Lt Governor said.

The Lt Governor reiterated the commitment of the UT Administration to create an enabling environment for the socio-economic empowerment of women.

"Today, our Nari Shakti is scripting new history in every sector. From academics to sports, from crafts to start-ups, our daughters are leading by an example and are inspiring others through their remarkable achievements,” he said.

At the ET Women Conclave 2024, the Lt Governor also talked about the programmes being run by the Universities and Higher Educational institutions of the UT focusing on skilling and upskilling of women.

“Our prime objective is to achieve gender equality in education,” the Lt Governor further added.

Woman Among Five Drug Peddlers Arrested With Contraband in Baramulla

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police Friday said to have arrested five drug peddlers alongwith contraband substance in Baramulla district.

"Continuing its efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs from the society, Police have arrested 5 drug peddlers including a lady drug peddler in Baramulla and recovered contraband substances from their possession", reads a statement issued to GNS.

"A police party of Police Station Baramulla headed by SHO PS Baramulla at a checkpoint established at Kralhar Baramulla intercepted a vehicle (Tata Venture) bearing registration number JK05D-3072 with five persons including a lady on board. During the search, 45 grams of Brown Sugar & 345 grams of Charas like substance was recovered from their possession", reads the statement.

The accused have been identified as Sharik Ahmad Sheikh son of Ab Rashid, Sharif Ahmad Sheikh son of Bashir Ahmad, Irfan Ahmad Sheikh son of Mushtaq Ahmad, and a lady, all residents of Dewan Bagh Baramulla & Bakir Ahmad Rather son of Ab Qayoom Rather resident of Chandsooma Kanispora. "All have been arrested and shifted to the police station where they remain in custody."

"A case under relevant sections of law has been registered at police Station Baramulla and investigations have been initiated", reads the statement.

"We urge the common masses that if you witness drug peddling or any other crime anywhere near you, feel free to contact nearest police establishment or dial 112. People are requested to cooperate with police in curbing the menace of drugs from the society. We reassure the community members that police will act tough against the criminals as per law", reads the statement further. (GNS)

Centre to Introduce J&K Women Reservation Bill in Lok Sabha Today

SRINAGAR: The Government of India is set to introduce a bill in the Parliament on Tuesday to grant 33 percent reservation for women in the Legislative Assembly of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory.

As per news agency, Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation(Amendment)Bill-2023 is being introduce today in the Lok Sabha for granting 33 percent reservation for women in J&K UT Assembly.

The bill is being brought as “The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill-2023, cleared by the Parliament in the special session convened in September this year for granting reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies, was not applicable to Jammu & Kashmir and Union Territory.

As already reported by KNO, women leaders from Jammu & Kashmir have welcomed the move.

On November 30, KNO reported that National Conference (NC) Women's wing President, Shamima Firdous had welcomed the move.

“It is a welcome move as it would help in dealing with the issues and concerns of womenfolk in a better way,” she had said.

Former minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Syed Asiya Naqash said that her party was always in favour of the women reservation.

“The decision to grant 33 percent reservation for women is a welcome move, but such decisions should be taken only by the elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir," she had said.

Peoples Conference (PC) leader Kaneez Fatima said that political reservation is a big step towards empowerment of women in J&K. (KNO)

SRINAGAR: Sole woman Cricketer from Kashmir Valley up for auction has gone unsold at a ceremony underway at Mumbai.

Jasia (35), who had become the only woman Cricketer to feature in WPL after being bought by Delhi for a base price of ₹20 Lakh in last edition, failed to attract the bidders as she went unsold in the second round of the auction for the WPL edition 2024.

Jasia, a resident of Braripora village, some 63 kms south of Srinagar, is a right-hand top order batter who has made her foray into Women's T20 cricket at various national level tournaments. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha honoured the women achievers of Kashmir Division at a felicitation event organized by Chinar Corps, today.

In his address, the Lt Governor congratulated all the women achievers who have carved a niche for themselves and inspiring other women to dream and accomplish new heights of success in various fields.

He lauded the noble initiative of Chinar Corps to empower Nari Shakti and acknowledging their contribution in nation building.

Empowerment of women is pivotal for the empowerment of J&K UT. In the last few years, J&K Administration has given priority to women empowerment based on the principles of equality, equal rights and equal opportunities as enshrined in the Constitution, the Lt Governor said.

“I am proud to say that half of our population has made an immense contribution in the prosperity and growth of UT,” he said.

The Lt Governor highlighted several schemes and programmes being implemented in J&K, under the guidance of Prime Minister, which are intended for holistic empowerment of women and realizing their full potential.

We have taken several steps through Schemes of NRLM, Mission Youth, JKTPO, Industry & Commerce for the speedy economic empowerment of women in urban and rural areas, he added.

In academics, our daughters are scripting new history and charting a new future with new confidence and a sense of self-esteem, the Lt Governor said.

On the occasion, Women Achievers were felicitated by the Lt Governor for their extraordinary contribution in diverse fields like Education, Law, Entrepreneurship, Social Work, Health, Literary, Sports, Journalism.

JK Police Crack Blind Murder Case of a Woman Within Five Days, 4 Apprehended

SRINAGAR: J&K Police on Monday claimed to have cracked a blind murder case of a woman within the five days of the incident by arresting four accused persons in Srinagar.

Police said, on October 17, 2023, Police Station Bemina received information that an unidentified woman had been murdered and her dead body was found on the roadside at Durbal, Bemina.

A police team rushed to the spot to secure the dead body and preserve the crime scene, they said.

A case under relevant sections of the law was registered at Police Station Bemina and investigation was initiated during which the deceased was identified as Tanveera, wife of Showkat Ahmad Kaloo, resident of Nundresh Colony B, Batamaloo, Srinagar.

During investigation, it was established that the woman was murdered on October 16, 2023 at West End Colony, Hyderpora and subsequently, her dead body was shifted from Hyderpora to Durbal Bemina to divert the investigation agency, police added.

Based upon available technical evidences, sustained interrogation of the suspects and subsequent recoveries, 4 accused persons identified as Abina Parveez (sister-in-law of the deceased) a resident of West End Colony, Hyderpora, a minor female child (name withheld), Ghulam Mohammad Ahanger of Khushipora HMT at present Gulposh Apartment Bemina and Jala Wadoo of Khushipora HMT at present Gulposh Apartment Bemina (Father and Mother of accused Abina) have been arrested by Police Station Bemina so far, police said and added further investigation is going on. Young Woman Killed, One Person Injured In Anantnag Accident

SRINAGAR: A young woman was killed and one person was injured in a road accident in Bijbhera area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, officials said.

They said that there was accident involving a truck and a bike near Sumo Stand at Gurdawara Padshah Bagh area of Bijbhera, leading to the injuries to two persons—bike rider and pillion.

Immediately after the accident, they said, the duo was shifted to SDH Bijbhera where the 23-year-old woman Misba Gulzar daughter of of Gulzar Ahmad Mantoo of Jablipora Bijbhera was declared brought dead on arrival by the doctors while the bike rider, Bashir Ahmed Rah (52) son of Ghulam Qadir of SK colony Anantnang has been admitted in critical condition.

A police officer told GNS that a case has been registered and further investigations are underway. (GNS)

Lok Sabha Passes Women's Reservation Bill, 454 members Vote in Favour

SRINAGAR: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Women's Reservation Bill which provides for a 33 percent quota in the lower house of parliament and the state assemblies for women.

As many as 454 members in the People's House voted in favour of the Bill while 2 members opposed it.

The Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, 2023 (Women’s reservation Bill) is the first legislation to be passed by the Lok Sabha in the ongoing special session of the Parliament. It is also the maiden legislation to be cleared in the new Parliament building.

"In order to enable greater participation of women as public representative in policy making at the state and national level, it is decided to introduce a fresh legislation for Constitutional amendment to provide for, as nearly as may be, one-third of total seats in the House of the People (Lok Sabha), the legislative assembly of every state and the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi to be reserved for women," according to the statement of objects and reasons of the Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday moved the bill for consideration and passage in Lok Sabha in the new Parliament building.

Replying to the discussion on the bill, the Minister on Wednesday said that he will not allow the legislaiton to get stuck in technicalities.

Amid apprehensions that implementation of the Women's Reservation Bill will take more than 5 years or even more, Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that it will be implemented soon after Census and delimitation post general elections scheduled early next year.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi initiated the discussion on the bill on the part of the opposition and supported the bill, but pitched for making arrangements for quota to women from SC, ST and OBC communities by holding a caste census.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also demanded a caste census and immediate implementation of the quota for women.

The women's reservation bill will be taken up by the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. (UNI)

Woman Dies By Suicide In North Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A woman from Quilmpora area of North Kashmir Bandipora district has allegedly committed suicide at her rented room.

An official told the news agency Kashmir Scroll that a 25 year old life has taken her life by hanging herself at their rented accommodation in Quilmuqam during the intervening night.

He said that police party reached to the spot and body has been taken to SDH Bandipora for medical formalities. Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated further investigation.(KS)

Seven Injured In Stray Dogs Attack In Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Three among seven elderly people including three ladies were grievously injured in an attack by stray dogs in the Kulan Kangan area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday.

Local sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that a pack of stray dogs attacked people in the Kulan area injuring seven persons who were taken to a nearby Primary Health Centre. Three persons including a female were shifted to Sub-District Hospital Kangan for advanced treatment.

Those shifted to Kangan Hospital have sustained multiple injuries. The medics gave anti-rabies vaccine to victims who have been identified as Amina Begum (65), Zahoor Ahmed (40), Mubeena Begum (70) Maryam (60) Abdul Aziz (65), Ghulam Ali (70) and Akhtar Hussain.

Expressing resentment over the incident, the locals said that the responsibility of catching stray dogs lies with the municipal committee but it has failed to curb the dog menace in the area. (KNT)

Woman Among Two Mysteriously Found Dead in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: A woman was among tow persons found dead under mysterious circumstances in Kulgam and Anantnag districts on Friday, officials said.

An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that a 42-year-old woman was found dead mysteriously at her home in Bathipora Kulgam. "She probably has died by suicide after consuming poisonous substance at her home", he said.

"In a separate incident, a youth from Shaksaz Kadipora Anantnag who was missing since yesterday evening was found dead in Wazir Bagh Anantnag. His body has been recovered from the spot," he said.

The police have taken cognizance of both the incidents and started further investigations. (KNO)

The situation in Kashmir is further complicated by the ongoing conflict in the region. The conflict has created a culture of violence, and this mentality has permeated into households. The stress of living in a conflict zone has also resulted in a rise in mental health issues, which can lead to an increase in domestic violence. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation worse for domestic violence victims in Kashmir. Lockdowns and restrictions on movement have made it difficult for victims to escape abusive situations or seek help. The pandemic has also resulted in an economic downturn, leading to a rise in poverty and unemployment, which can further exacerbate the problem. It is essential to address this issue at various levels. Prevention efforts are crucial to ensure that domestic violence is not normalized. Education campaigns must be launched to promote gender equality, and community leaders must be involved in promoting respect for women's rights. Law enforcement agencies must also be vigilant in enforcing laws against domestic violence. Victims of domestic violence need support and resources to escape abusive situations. Shelters and safe spaces must be established to provide a safe haven for victims. Counseling services and legal assistance must be provided to help them heal and seek justice. There should be a concerted effort to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. Community involvement is also crucial in addressing domestic violence in Kashmir.
