SRINAGAR: Power supply and road connectivity remained interrupted across distict Kupwara after J&K received its 2nd snowfall of the season on Sunday.

The normal life was severely affected due to uninterrupted snowfall in north Kashmir. The snowfall left most parts of the Kupwara district without electricity while traffic movement too was affected. Most parts of the Kupwara district remained disconnected with the district headquarter.

In many of the adjacent villages of Kupwara, Handwara and Langate, the snow clearing machines had not been pressed into service resulting in the hardships of the locals.

In Kupwara, the upper reaches received heavy snowfall, villages disconnected with the district and sub district headquarters.

The locals said that the snow clearing machines did not reach their areas.The road connectivity between different plane and higher areas too remained severely affected following the heavy snowfall on Sunday evening.

The locals added that following the heavy snowfall, the transporters could not resume their services as the roads were slippery. The snowfall also caused disruption in electricity while drinking water supply too remained affected.

"The upper reaches including plain areas like Monabal Makal, Rangnath, Qaziabad, Pharou, Qalamabad, Haril, Langate, and several other villages have received more than a feet snowfall. However, the authorities’ failure to clear the roads has multiplied the problems of locals here.

People in these areas also alleged that the authorities failed to clear roads off snow facing severe inconvenience. The residents of scores of villages located in the upper reaches of the Kupwara, Handwara, Langate and other areas urged the authorities to press snow clearing machines into service following heavy snowfall in the area.

The residents said, "We are without electricity and are disconnected with the district and sub district headquarters  as roads have not been cleared. We urge authorities to take speedy steps to clear the roads."

With the second snowfall across the district, the majority of areas remained cutoff from district headquarters throwing normal life out of gear. Snowfall led to the closure of Kupwara-Karnah, Keran, Machil, Budnamal, Jumgund and other roads leading to upper reaches of the district.

The business establishments and transport remained affected by and large and traffic off the roads with minimum movement of general public and less percentage of government employees in offices.

The snowfall also caused widespread power and drinking water disruption giving tough time to netizens. People from Rajwar Handwara said that whenever there is snowfall, their area remains cut off from the main town for days together.

The administration which has established control rooms across the subdivisions of the district said that the snow clearance operations were initiated from early in the morning.

Talking to HEADLINES TODAY, concern officals said that, "Main roads in the district had been made accessible while working hard to make all the link roads motorable soon for civil administration."

SRINAGAR: A collision between two vehicles left five persons injured in Handwara of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday afternoon.

An official told GNS that an accident took place between two vehicles bearing registration numbers PB054 4287 and DL10 CF 7147 at Tutigund Handwara.

In the incident, the official said, five persons were injured and subsequently lifted from the site to GMC Handwara for treatment.

The official identified the injured as; Gowhar Ahmad Mir (19) son of Mohd Ashraf resident of Mughalpora, Zamrooda Begum (35) wife of Tariq Ahmad Magray resident of Kandi, Aazim Tariq (07) son of Tariq Ahmad Magray resident of Kandi, Huzaif Tariq (5) son of Tariq Ahmad Magray resident of Kandi and Arhan Tariq.

An official told GNS that cognisance has been taken into the matter for further investigations. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: A ‘man-eater’ leopard was killed in village Nichama of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district this evening, local sources said.

They told GNS that a leopard, believed to have killed a three-year-old boy last Monday, was killed by the Wildlife Department shooters.

“The leopard had been on prowl and posed an imminent threat to locals and their livestock”, they said adding as soon as the beast emerged, the watchful locals gathered around to chase it away and in the meantime a team of Wildlife Department laced with required weapons shot at the beast, resulting in its instant death.

When contacted, a Wildlife Department official confirmed to GNS about the killing of the leopard. “We were on watch to track its movements ever after the death of the minor boy took place yesterday”, the official said.

Meanwhile the local populace has extended gratitude towards the District Administration and Wildlife Department for killing the beast. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: A 55-year-old man was injured after being attacked by a wild bear in north Kashmir's Handwara village on Monday morning.

An official told Kashmir Scroll that soon after the incident he was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment at Kupwara, where from he was referred to GMC Handwara for treatment.

The identified him as Manzoor Ahmad Ganai son of Abdul Ahad Ganai of Ganai Mohalla Kandi (55).

Pertinently, this is second such bear attack incident in the district since past week. (KS)

SRINAGAR: At least three persons were injured in a bear attack in Mawar area of Handwara in north Kashmir's Kupwara district this afternoon. 

Reports reaching GNS said that a black bear emerged at Yahama village Mawar and attacked three persons leaving them with injuries. 

The injured trio identified as Javid Ahmad Pir, Bashir Ahmad Sheikh and Mohammad Yousaf Sheikh was evacuated from the site to a nearby health facility for immediate treatment. 

When contacted, a Wildlife Department official told GNS that a team has been rushed to the area to catch the bear. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Three women including a minor girl sustained injuries after attacked by fox in Lacchhe area in Handwara on Friday.

Reports reaching GNS said that three women namely Saja Begum (70) wife of Mohammad Dayam War, Mugli Begum (60) wife of Mohammad Shaban Ahanger, Khalida Begum (28) Shabir Ahmad War and a four-year-old girl Ayat Irshad daughter of Irshad Ahmad Ahanger were attacked by a fox early this evening.

The injured were taken to a nearby health facility, from where they were shifted to District Hospital Handwara.

When contacted, a medical official at DH Handwara told GNS that the injured persons are doing well and there is nothing much to worry about their overall well-being. “They are being administered with required treatment and are likely to be discharged soon”, the medical official said. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: An octogenarian allegedly died by suicide in Zachaldara area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Tuesday.

An official told news agency, Kashmir Scroll that the man hanged himself to death at his residence in Zachaldara.

They said that he was rushed to the nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. They added that police have taken cognizance of the incident and started further investigations. (KS)

SRINAGAR: A Border Security Forces' Constable died of a suspected cardiac arrest here on Friday afternoon, officials said. 

They told GNS that one Constable identified as Patil of 91 Batallion stationed at Naugam was found dead, leading to speculation that he has died due to cardiac arrest. 

"To allay any doubts, the body has been sent for post-mortem for factual details about his death", they said. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: A woman was critically injured today when she was attacked by a wild bear in Handwara village of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. An official told news agency, Kashmir Scroll a woman identified as Saja Begum wife of Wali Mohd Mir of Audoora Handwara was attacked when she was working in her paddy field.

The woman has sustained critical injuries and was immediately taken to nearby hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, police took cognizance of this Incident.

Pertinently, This is second such wild bear attack which reported in north Kashmir's Kupwara district in the last 24 hours. On Wednesday two persons were injured when they were attacked by wild bear in their agriculture fields. (KS)

SRINAGAR: There wasn't any improvised explosive device (IED) but an old mortor shell which was recovered by BSF in Handwara, police said. 

"An information was generated wherein a Road Opening Party of BSF said it recovered an 'IED' in general area of Bhatpura village near a culvert", a police official told GNS, adding "However on a close assessment, the recovered ammunition turned out to be an old mortor shell."

"The recovered shell may have been lying at the site for a quite a time", the official further said. (GNS)
