SRINAGAR: Two infiltrators were killed as army and police claimed to have foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control in Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.   

“An infiltration bid by terrorists was successfully foiled along the Line of Control in Uri Sector in a joint operation led by the Indian Army,” a defence ministry spokesperson said in a statement to GNS.

 “Numerous inputs were earlier received from multiple Intelligence agencies regarding terrorist groups planning and intending to infiltrate across Line of Control in Uri Sector,” he said, adding, “Based on these inputs, surveillance and counter-infiltration grid was reviewed and strengthened.”

In the wee hours, he said, “own” ambushes close to Line of Control spotted a group of militants moving towards the Line of Control. 
“Own forces continuously tracked the hostile movement and established contact resulting in heavy exchange of fire,” he said, adding, “While the operation was under progress, intermittent fire was also drawn from Pakistan forward posts, in vicinity of line of control”.

The operation resulted in neutralisation of two militants and recovery of as many AK rifles, three magazines, four hand grenades, ammunition and other “war-like” stores, he said.

“The infiltration bid by terrorists indicates desperation on part of Pakistan to fuel unrest in peaceful Kashmir Valley at a time when general elections have been scheduled and the democratic process is unfolding,” he said, adding, “This operation is a testimony to the synergy between various Security and Intelligence agencies who are committed to ensure peace and tranquility in Kashmir.” (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said to have booked five miscreants under Public Safety Act and subsequently lodging them in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal Jammu and District Jail Udhampur. 

"Acting tough against ANEs (Anti-national Elements) Baramulla Police booked five persons namely Asif Ali Bhat son of Ali Mohammad resident of Badipora Tangmarg, Mohammad Yaqoob Bhat son of Gh Mohd resident of Tantraypora Palhallan, Waseem Mehraj Farash @Waseem Farash son of Mehraj ud din resident of Khanpora, Bashir Ahmad Sualiah son of Late Ghulam Mohammad resident of Mohalla Jadeed Baramulla & Bilal Ahmad Dar @Shakir son of Gh Nabi resident of Wussan Khoie Pattan under Public Safety Act after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent Authority," reads a statement issued to GNS. 

"The booked persons have been detained and subsequently lodged in District Jail Udhampur & Central Jail Kot-Balwal Jail Jammu."

"Pertinent to mention that many cases are registered against these  persons and were involved in the disturbance of L&O and subversion. Despite their involvement in many FIRs they did not mend their anti national & Social  activities," reads the statement further. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police in Baramulla Tuesday attached a vehicle bought from money earned from alleged drug trafficking activity.

"Continuing its action against drug peddlers, Police in Baramulla attached  vehicles illegal properties (Swift bearing registration number JK01M-7247 worth Lacs belonging to notorious drug peddler namely Ashiq Illahi Parray son of Ab Razaq resident of Lawaypora Shalteng Srinagar," reads a statement issued to GNS. 

"The action was taken under the sections 68-E read with 68-F (1) of NDPS Act of 1985 & were linked with case FIR No. 368/2023 u/s 8/21-29 NDPS Act of PS Pattan."

"The property was identified as illegally acquired property during the course of investigation/enquiry conducted by Police. The property was prima facie acquired from illicit trafficking in Narcotic drug and Psychotropic substances by the drug peddlers," the statement reads. 

"This operation reaffirms the commitment of Police to combat the drug menace. Local people of the area hailed the initiative of Police," the statement reads further. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Three women, two children, and twelve others were injured in a stray dog attack in north Kashmir’s Baramulla villages on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning when a stray dog bit seventeen people and several animals within a few hours in Heewan, Fathegarh, and Sheeri villages of Narvaw Baramulla.

The injured individuals were taken to PHC Sheeri, where doctors provided first aid and administered anti-rabies vaccines. Three critically injured individuals were then referred to GMC Baramulla.

Dr Azhar Majeed, Medical Officer at PHC Sheeri, said that all injured individuals received first aid, with three critically injured individuals being referred to GMC Baramulla for further treatment.

Just five days prior, a pack of stray dogs had attacked at least twelve individuals in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. (KS)

SRINAGAR: Two persons, injured in a road accident in Baramulla's Uri, have succumbed to their injuries, taking the death count to 10.

Principal GMC Baramulla, Dr Ruby told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that two more injured persons succumbed to their injuries late last night. 

She said that they were referred to SKIMS Soura last night, where they succumbed to their injuries 

They have been identified as Shabir Ahmed son of Abdul Gani and Shabir Ahmed son of Mohammed Abdullah--both residents of Bujithallan.

Eight persons were killed, while seven were injured after a vehicle skidded off and fell into a deep gorge in Baramulla's Boniyar on Wednesday evening. (KNO)

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday announced ex-gratia relief to the next-of-kins of the deceased and for the treatment of those injured in the fatal accident. 

"Deeply saddened by the tragic accidents in Baramulla & Kishtwar. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of those injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives in the tragedies. The injured would be given Rs. 1 lakh", Office of LG Manoj Sinha wrote on a post on X, as per GNS. 

"Directed the district administrations to provide all possible assistance to the families expeditiously", reads the post. 

Pertinent to mention here that at least seven persons were killed and eight others injured in a tragic road mishap at Bujthala Boniyar in Uri Baramulla this afternoon.

In another accident, two persons were killed and as many injured in a road mishap at Warwan in Kishtwar. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: State Investigation Unit (SIU) Baramulla produced a chargesheet against three accused persons before a Court of Additional Sessions Judge (NIA Court) here on Tuesday.

“The chargesheet was produced in a case vide FIR number 103/2023 under section 7/25 IA Act 13, 18, 23 and 39 UAPA of Police Station Uri”, reads a statement issued to GNS.

The case, the statement reads, has been produced against three accused persons namely Showkat Ali Awan son of Ab Kareem Awan, Ahmad Din Khatana son of Shakir Din Khatana and Mohd Sideeq Khatana son of Umer Din Khatana, all residents of Churunda Uri Baramulla.

The next date of hearing of the case is fixed on 16/02/2024. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police Friday said to have arrested five drug peddlers alongwith contraband substance in Baramulla district. 

"Continuing its efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs from the society, Police have arrested 5 drug peddlers including a lady drug peddler in Baramulla and recovered contraband substances from their possession", reads a statement issued to GNS.     

"A police party of Police Station Baramulla headed by SHO PS Baramulla at a checkpoint established at Kralhar Baramulla intercepted a vehicle (Tata Venture) bearing registration number JK05D-3072 with five persons including a lady on board. During the search, 45 grams of Brown Sugar & 345 grams of Charas like substance was recovered from their possession", reads the statement. 

The accused have been identified as Sharik Ahmad Sheikh son of Ab Rashid, Sharif Ahmad Sheikh son of Bashir Ahmad, Irfan Ahmad Sheikh son of Mushtaq Ahmad, and a lady, all residents of Dewan Bagh Baramulla & Bakir Ahmad Rather son of Ab Qayoom Rather resident of Chandsooma Kanispora. "All have been arrested and shifted to the police station where they remain in custody."

"A case under relevant sections of law has been registered at police Station Baramulla and investigations have been initiated", reads the statement. 

"We urge the common masses that if you witness drug peddling or any other crime anywhere near you, feel free to contact nearest police establishment or dial 112. People are requested to cooperate with police in curbing the menace of drugs from the society. We reassure the community members that police will act tough against the criminals as per law", reads the statement further. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: District Police Baramulla Saturday destroyed a huge quantity of seized contraband substances, worth crores, in the presence of a Magistrate in Lassipora Pulwama. 

“Today, District Level Drug Disposal Committee Baramulla under the chairmanship of SSP Baramulla Sh Amod Ashok Nagpure-IPS destroyed a huge quantity of seized drugs and psychotropic substances under section 52A of NDPS Act”, said a police spokesperson in a statement issued to GNS.

“The seized contraband substances of 27 cases of Police Station Uri, Boniyar, Pattan, Kreeri, Kunzer & Tangmarg were destroyed. The seized substances include 6.303 Kgs of Heroin, 63.413 Kgs of Poppy Straw, 207 gms of Ganja, 652 gms of Cannabis, 600 gms of Cannabis Powder, 3.950 Kgs of Bang Bosa, 953 gms of Charas, 1.120 Kgs of Charas Powder & 127 gms of Fukki worth crores were destroyed at Kashmir Health Care System, IGC Lassipora in presence of constituted committee headed by DySP DAR DPL Baramulla, DySP ANTF Kashmir, DySP CID CI Pulwama, Executive Magistrate Kunzer, Reader to SSP Baramulla, Field Inspector of Pollution Control board, IC Godown and other Police officers of the district”, the spokesperson said.

“It is pertinent to mention here that in July 2023 Baramulla Police also undertook the destruction of seized contraband substances in 32 cases of various Police Stations of the district. The destroyed contraband substance includes 6.376 gms of Charas, 32.900 kgs of Poppy Straw, 14.289 kgs of Heroin & 18 gms of Brown Sugar worth crores.”

“The people of the area met with the officers during the exercise and thanked them for their hard work, professionalism, and commitment towards making the society drug-free”, the spokesperson said further. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: After a gruelling rescue operation spanning over eight hours, a 47-year-old man has been successfully brought out safely from a 40-ft deep well in Tangmarg area in Baramulla.

An F&ES official told GNS that they are fortunate enough for being successful in bringing the man out of the well. "We had to fight every inch amid bone chilling cold to reach the man, who as per his family had fallen into the well while cleaning it", the official said. 

"As soon as we received the message, we reached the spot with men and machinery and launched a joint operation alongside Police and locals", the official said. 

"After over eight hours of gruelling rescue operation, we were able to successfully bring out the man from the well", the official said. 

"The man has been hospitalized for necessary treatment", the official added. 

Meanwhile, the family and locals have extended their gratitude to the F&ES and Police and also to locals for their efforts to bring the man out of the well safely. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: Fire and Emergency Services Department has urged public not to disrupt firefighting operations after reports of alleged disruption by the public during a fire mishap at Sherbagh Kanlibagh in Baramulla district last night. 

"On 03.12.2023 at 21:24 Hrs., Fire & Emergency Services Control Room Sopore received a fire call regarding a fire at Kanlibagh, Baramulla where one three-storeyed, concrete/wooden residential-cum-commercial building was involved in fire. The ground floor of the building was used for residential purpose, whileas the Ist and 2nd floor of the building was used by two Joinery Mills. The FCR Sopore immediately deputed the fire tenders alongwith the crew to the spot from Fire Station Baramulla", reads a statement issued to GNS. 

"As it was a major fire, the reinforcement was also made by Fire Station Old Town Baramulla/Sangrama/Seelu/Sopore/Rohama and accordingly the fire was controlled in the shortest possible time."

"Apart from some disruptive elements interfering in firefighting operations, fire service received good cooperation from Police, Army and General Public", the statement reads adding "It is again reiterated that the Public should desist from approaching fire scene and should not disrupt firefighting operations." 

Notably, it was alleged that some locals expressed their resentment over alleged delay by the Fire and Emergency Services Department while reaching the site to douse off the flames. (GNS)
